Re: the six consciousnesses (vijnanas)

how do thoughts arise? it may have something to do with will and memory. I want/will to access my memory. this also involves knowledge which abides in memory. complicated stuff. I don't know the formal Buddhist approach towards this. how do thoughts arise? I don't know, nor would I be able to abide ...

Re: reading Dogen's Shobogenzo

Yasutani's "Flowers Fall" is a commentary on the Genjokoan and well worth reading. discusses "absolute manifest reality" (Genjokoan). my perspective sees things as totally empty and yet totally real. for another book on reality Gudo Nishijima's selection of Dogen's koans (Shobogenzo) is very clear. ...

Return to Reality

die completely spiritually. become like ashes, or dead wood... then seeing and yet blind, conscious and yet unconscious. consciously unconscious. this is with the help of Lord Yama. after a while reality emerges and objects can be seen once again and focused upon. without a knowledge of prajna this ...

Re: No worries

What are your views on karma, cause and effect? if you harm another you will be subject to retribution. even a buddha should not resist physical violence with physical violence (he shames himself). yet we are told that zen's second patriarch disrobed and lived a mundane life. im not worried about c...

Non Identification and then freedom.

once you have stopped identifying yourself with anything, be free to enter into the market-place and take up any identification you want. i am a layman, i am a monk, i am a buddha, i am a god etc. it doesn't really matter; you won't be able to attach to any of these labels. Zen master Huike took on ...

Re: All is One

Hinduism/new age doesnt reach it, nor does Parmenides and Plato's account of his teaching, nor does Plotinus' Aneads. Platonism and Neoplatonism doesnt reach it. best to stick with the Dharma of Seng Tsan. you can happily forget everything i have said about 1 and just get on with making your tea, do...

Re: words enter the intellect: one is known.

to be attached to 1 is to miss the point. buddhism is learning something new and then letting go of it. beyond 1 is mysterious emptiness and this is beyond all grasping, beyond emptiness is tathata. the spiral turns in my case again and again visiting old concepts or ways of seeing. emptiness, tatha...

"Ananda". Like cool aid it rotts you'r spiritual teeth. It is a source of attachment and is ultimately suffering. No joy: no sorrow. No pleasure: no pain.

Re: All is One

The Enlightened One. No self to be enlightened. No enlightenment to be attained. No One to be attached to. Where buddhahood 'attained' there would be no craving, no fear and no blemish? I'm not a buddha.

If the Buddha was no longer dreaming then perhaps everything was real to him. I don't know. I'm not a buddha.

Re: Upside Down Thinking

It is important to feel feelings if we are to gradually let go of them. Expressing a feeling is different from feeling it. Expressing anger upon a person it will continue to come back later; perhaps even worse. You can save for later and process/feel negative feelings later on when you are alone. Th...

Re: Upside Down Thinking

Sounds like good advice. Ordinary mind, begginers mind is just as special as experts mind they are both fundamentally 1 mind. Clouds come and clouds go. If we can gently observe our reactions and feelings without punishing ourselves. That helps. It's fine to be impatient or irritated. Just watch the...

Re: All is One

Without my teachers, i would know very little. I have 2 ascended Masters that have directly taught me over the years as well as friends and colleagues on Dharma Wheel. I am reluctant to talk about teachers knowing that not everyone has the opportunity to find a teacher because of their location, hea...

Re: All is One

Dan, The Lord Buddha taught us that we should restrain our thought by restraining our bodies. Restrain where you rest your eyes. Restrain your body movements. Slow down, gentle movements. Restrain your thoughts, think less and on good things. Restrain your feelings, by mindfulness of them. Self pity...

Re: All is One

A tadpole (baby frog) suddenly sees the emptiness of the water he grows in and that his tail (defilements and self conceit) is shrinking. He comes out onto the dry ground of reality and thinks this is real! And then as he gets bigger he is happy in water and land and tends not to think much about ei...

Re: All is One

Thank you Keith! Yes, but don't attach to it. No attainment. Not emptiness, not reality, not 1, not no self, not enlightenment. To have concepts is to prolierate and causes conflict. Try to be free of views. I know it's not easy, especially when you 'perceive' things, even 'reality'. Just fetch you'...
