Re: What is shin buddhism? IS it monotheistic?

Shotuko, Excellent post, it answered me in a way that has not happened yet. What book is that from? On another point, I have been talking to people online and they say that all the modern books are crap because the authors don't see Amida as being a real buddha/real person..they say it is just a sym...

Re: Does the soul exist in Mahayana thought?

It seems like this is a popular topic of buddhist books I have read; especially when it comes to having x amount of rebirths until one reaches the point of no rebirth. p.s. If anyone can suggest good books that cover general buddhist philosophy and such I would greatly appreciate it. Especially in t...

Does the soul exist in Mahayana thought?

Hello, I was just reading a book review of TNH's "The heart of the buddha's teachings" on Amazon and a reviewer said that the idea of Annata or no self is false and that TNH is incorrect by mentioning it in his book. So do buddhists believe in an individual's soul or self? If not what gets reincarna...

Is there a difference between Shin and pure land buddhism?

Hello, Just a little confused. I was reading about Shin Buddhism where the only requirement is basically faith in Amida buddha and using the nembutso. Then I read another thread on July 6 which talks about pure land buddhism and how it must be combined with mahayana, zen school and etc. What is the ...

Re: What is shin buddhism? IS it monotheistic?

Dumbbombu, Thanks for the informative reply, I appreciate the thought and the time you took. I think I may have not phrased my original email correctly. I think it is awesome that salvation is available to all people, no matter what or who the people are. But I also think it is important to behave o...

Re: What is shin buddhism? IS it monotheistic?

I guess the one thing that doesn't sit well with me as that in the information I have read; there is no encouragement to try and better ourselves and maintain some sense of ethics. Maybe I am wrong of which I hope I am, but I find it hard to swallow that all I have to do is have faith and I can stil...
