Re: Wrathful deities

1. What would be some of the pros and cons for practicing with a wrathful deity? 2. Does one achieve quicker progress with them as opposed to peaceful deities? 3. Are wrathful deities suited more for people who possess deeper afflictions? Something interesting from the Guhyagarbha, Longchenpa says ...

Re: Does it matter if you reveal your yidam?

We know the Yidams of Padmasambhava, the 84 Mahasiddhas, etc. So, either they did not keep them secret, or someone close to them could not keep their mouth shut. I don't think any of us here at the level of the people you just mentioned, so we gotta be a little wary of imitating their behaviour. Th...

Re: Does it matter if you reveal your yidam?

Sometimes I read that you aren't supposed to reveal the yidam you practice. Other times I read biographies or watch YouTube videos of living people and they, well, reveal their yidam clear as day. I had a conversation with somebody today and they told the whole room what their main practice is. So,...

BTW best method to repair samaya is completion stage.
Are you talking about the dissolution stage during deity yoga or the physical practices like the six yogas of Naropa?

Methods for keeping Samaya clean

I was looking to get a general list of methods used for keeping Samaya clean. I know there's the usual ones such as the Vajrasattva mantra and participating in tsok practices, but I was wondering if there were any others. Does a daily practice session count? Or guru yoga? All of the above?

Re: Days where karma is multiplied

Well at least on this planet, if we look at the Buddha's life, important things happened on full moon days (like his enlightenment, etc.). If we look at the Pali canon, many arhats achieved enlightenment on full moon nights as well. So maybe there's something to it? I imagine channels are effected s...

Re: What are the Preliminary Teachings?

"Focus on preliminary teachings for now and leave the chakra for later. They are not important yet." Grigoris I am new to Buddhist practice, although I had already developed a meditation practice, and I have read a number of books by Buddhist authors. I want to structure my learning as best I can a...

Re: Left Buddhism

So do i just continue where i left off? Do i need to do some purification practice? Am i doomed to a lower rebirth? Continuing to not practice is much worse than coming back to it. If it was me, I'd come back and when opportunities for purification came about I'd take them (e.g., participating in a...

Re: Merit needed to see Buddhas

Since motivation of bodhisattvas & buddhas is same - to help as many beings as possible become free of all obscurations & suffering, our merit may have little to do with their appearance. They teach & help devas too, whose types of suffering we would not consider suffering at all. The hell beings, ...

Re: New Head of Nyingma: Kathok Getse Rinpoche

Buddhas do not appear when sentient beings have so much merit they do not need them, and when they have so little merit they cannot be helped. We are nearing the lower end of that curve. What would be an example of sentient beings having so much merit they do not need a Buddha? AFAIK every pure rea...

Re: New Head of Nyingma: Kathok Getse Rinpoche

Well, maybe we aren't. After all, this is why Śākyamuni passed on. We justify it as a lesson in impermanence, things like lifespan and so on are inextricably linked with merit. Since a Buddha is beyond karma, etc., their appearance in the world is a function of the merit of living beings in the wor...

Re: Karma Kagyu Ngondro - Mandala Offerings

There are some good instructions in the book, Words Of My Perfect Teacher By Patrul Rinpoche. Actually, it's full of all kinds of good stuff. But he goes into some detail about making Mandala offerings. . . . There's a different pattern for doing the rice piles on the mandala plate in Karma Kagyu t...

Re: A request to explain Vajrayana to a common Mahayanika

Thank you. This is really wonderful. Does it follow then that an arya bodhisattva benefits sentient beings similarly to a non-arya bodhisattva but any given instance of their activities are 100x, 1000x, etc more inconceivably beneficial? Since at the very least, not considering any siddhi like know...

Re: A request to explain Vajrayana to a common Mahayanika

Would it matter that non-arya Bodhisattvas may be very afflicted, does the force of the Bodhisattva aspiration ensure beings are benefited even if they don't consciously intend it? I can imagine Arya Bodhisattvas having powers like clairvoyance which would help them know what sentient beings need, ...

Maybe give yourself a space and try focusing on Chenrezig or Tara. Somewhere I have heard that Chenrezig is great when it comes to trauma.
I can also recommend Guru Rinpoche along these lines. My teacher says the 7 branch prayer is one of the most effective in overcoming obstacles.

Re: A request to explain Vajrayana to a common Mahayanika

What practices can you recommend that would lead to a realization of the first bhumi? Something simple would be nice. Ngondro practice, refuge, bodhicitta, Vajrasattva, Mandala offerings, and Guru Yoga. One does not really need any other practices. Where would shamatha fit in? Serious question, I'm...

Re: Garchen Bernakchen Sadhana

Hmm, something’s maybe fishy here. I suppose there are many ways of understanding but I was always taught that Dorje Bernagchen was not an manifestation of Avalokiteshvara. Is it possible that Garchen Rinpoche was giving a different empowerment and some well meaning disciple just put some accidenta...
