Re: Transfer of merit and Tibetan practices

Even the Buddha had disciples whom he could not help. Sure, but he also had many disciples who he did help. Are you saying they would have been enlightened at that time without him? If you're stuck in a well, you can't get out without help. At the same token, if someone lowers you a rope to pull yo...

Re: Transfer of merit and Tibetan practices

Buddhas and Bodhisattvas such as Tara are present whenever we bring them to mind (multiple scriptural sources for that, and well Buddhas are omnipresent). If I bring Tara to mind by visualizing her while reciting her mantra or praises, am I not taking part in her vast activity and therefore generati...

Re: Questions on death

Ok I have two different questions about death. More might come up. 💀 One, In the Tibetan system (and other asian Buddhist systems) it is advised that the body of the deceased remains untouched until the space element dissolves. Does that mean it is unadvised to be an organ donor? Two, some teachers...

Re: Tibetan Buddhism and the Third Precept

How about we just stick to the words of the Buddha? It seems all these made up stories are causing a lot of obstacles. I don't see how that even remotely applies to what I've said. Whether it's a magic drunk super man rapist or some out dated reason that denies me the right to eat out a woman. Neve...

Re: Tibetan Buddhism and the Third Precept

Perhaps we should consider music and videos intoxicating substances too? Maybe even Dharmawheel? Or for some - language? Maybe we should stop talking as well because we aren't arya beings and therefore whenever we talk it isn't 100% mantra and must be a lie. For some people I could argue they are. ...

Re: Tibetan Buddhism and the Third Precept

In general, the principe is that you should not harm others. Wasting a lot of time on the specifics (unless you hold vows, and therefore it becomes your livelihood) is without point. Shouldn't there also be some aspect of not harming yourself? I think as humans with functioning senses we can use a ...

Re: Very sad news: Letter to Sogyal Rinpoche / Abuse allegations

Guru Rinpoche, after being adopted by the childless king of Odiyana, killed a child in it's cot. When people protested about the murder he then killed the child's mother (if I remember correctly). I imagine that if Guru Rinpoche was alive now many here would be trying to get him lynched. Yeah, but ...

Re: Most Powerful Dharmapala?

Since Guru Rinpoche bound most of the Dharmapalas under oath himself, and he is easily invoked through the Seven Line Prayer, why not just go straight to the source? Invoking Guru Rinpoche with faith yields infinite benefits. If you have the Dharmapala practice and some commitment, of course don't ...

In particular, the fully enlightened ones also protect us from ourselves, I'd say.

Re: taking samaya pills

So I'm curious as to the best method for taking samaya pills. Should you let it dissolve your mouth, chew, or swallow immediately? Or does it not matter? samaya pills? You mean pills for purifying samaya? If so, you just scrape of a little. Probably using the wrong terminology. Maybe medicine pills...

silly shrine question

So my apartment has recently acquired some cats, and those cats recently discovered that my shrine has delicious water bowls. I'm wondering if having them jump up on the shrine and drink from them is bad karma for them, or not something to worry about?

Re: Lost and hesitant to find teacher

My Dharma practice diary shows I missed Jan to Mar without any practice. I have no recollection of what happened. If you have no recollection of what happened for three months, you might be suffering from some kind of bi-polar disorder. It would be good to find a professional psychologist to talk to.

Re: is dalai lama suffer because his helping others?

Suffering happens due to negative karma from previous actions. Helping others generates positive karma which will ripen positively in the future.

If suffering happens in the course of helping others, it's from previous negative karma ripening.

Re: Can a respectful skeptic practice sutrayana-only?

I think most westerners who start practical are skeptical of it (even if they don't think so). If you approach it with an open mind then IMO there's no problem. The point is to gain trust in the practice through personal experience, not just to reinforce your blind faith in it without any actual rea...

Khyentse Wangpo managed it. Guess this begs the question -- when is rebirth not rebirth?
When it's emanation.
