This may or may not come as a surprise, but I've decided to step down and leave DharmaWheel.
I'll still be running the Pure Land subreddit, but I'll be deactivating my account here.
It's been a pleasure discussing Pure Land with you all and I wish you folks the best.

Re: How do we deal with desires?
Apparently a lot of people are having trouble understanding the fact that this question was raised in the Pure Land subforum and the appropriate answers are from the Pure Land point of view. OP (bcol01) and others - feel free to pm me if you have anything PERTINENT (ie Pure Land-related) to add to ...

Re: How do we deal with desires?
Pure Land does require a belief in cause and effect, a rudimentary understanding of the three poisons, as well as a certain amount of disdain for the rounds of suffering. It does not; however, require one to view one's desires as problematic such that one changes one's behavior (in a vain attempt at...

Re: How do we deal with desires?
Lots of answers in this thread that have nothing to do with Pure Land Buddhism; which isn't about seeing all desires as problematic, giving up all desires that aren't the desire for Buddhahood, or taking refuge in Buddha Nature.

Re: How do we deal with desires?
From a Pure Land standpoint, in terms of the 3 minds of entrusting: 1. Genuine Mind - we must be honest with ourselves in regards to our desires, seeing those desires for what they are, and honestly assess our abilities to cope with/manage them. 2. Profound Mind - this is realizing our limitations. ...

Re: Choosing between Chan, Zen, Jìngtǔzōng, and Jōdo Shinshū
But it's not uncommon now. Since Pure Land, according to the book Pure-Land Zen , "does not stress the master-disciple relationship and de-emphasizes the role of sub-schools, roshis/gurus and rituals", I don't need to go chasing down teachers before I can do anything. I think maybe you mi...

Re: Choosing between Chan, Zen, Jìngtǔzōng, and Jōdo Shinshū
When choosing a path to follow, the standard model usually goes a little different: - See what's local - See what's accessible (what teachers/environments/communities you click with) - See which practice fits - See which take on doctrine fits I know your prior experience makes some of this a bit eas...

Re: Irreversible bodhisattvas
Thank you for sharing. Did you find anything specific to non-retrogression in Pure Land schools, it being a special feature of Sukhavati? :thanks: I always found this passage in the Astasahasrika very interesting: It is again another mark of irreversibility if a Bodhisattva, on seeing in his dreams...

It's probably linked above, but you can check out the 3 Pure Land sutras at the following 2 sites: Rulu's Translations Free BDK downloads Shinran / Jodo Shinshu isn't the only form of Japanese Pure Land. Only bring it up as Jodo Shu may be a bit more consistent with continental Pure Land (such as Ch...

Re: Buddha-mindfulness: Linking Theravada and Pure Land
Me too. Buddhānussati was the first chant I memorized in Pali. Bhikkhu Bodhi taught it in a class on the four protective meditations . As a recent Mahayana convert, I was happy to see a clear opening in Pure Land for me to further develop this practice in a different form. It’s unfortunate that the...

Re: Buddha-mindfulness: Linking Theravada and Pure Land
Those are two of my favorite Pali suttas, along with SN 55.24 . I really like the Itipiso (Buddhanussati) chant from Theravada. I have pretty large library of Pali suttas (including the Sutta Nipata and the Itivuttaka) that I need to finally sit down and read through. I spend a lot of time with Thai...

Just FYI - you guys have free reign to post any Shin stuff you like on the Shin subforum here. Not trying to stop you from creating your own thing, but the Shin subforum here has only one post since it's creation at the beginning of last month and could at least serve as a stopgap until the technica...
