is this enough? I know probably not
It's more than enough. You can surely be born there. The only hindrance would be your doubt, and even then it would only restrict one to birth from the womb on the borderlands, unable to see that Buddha, hear the Dharma, make offerings, or acquire merit.

Re: can we surely born in Pureland?

One good way to date a text is like this: The easier it is to get to the pureland: the later the text. Wow, where do you get that idea? The 18th vow comes from the Larger Sukhavati Sutra, which is recognized by academics as the earliest. There are other statements in that sutra that display the eas...

Re: Source of Indra's Net?

I think what we've arrived at more-or-less is, with @Admin_PC suggesting "wisdom" rather than "knowledge": 知一切法界中如因陀羅網 knowledge 知 of all dharmadhātu 一切法界, within [it] 中, likened to Indra’s Net 如因陀羅網 Well 知 is an older form of 智, and both are used to translate jñāna, which is related to the English...

Re: Source of Indra's Net?

What are the big known issues? I'm not surprised to hear this, but I'm curious what exactly these big issues are. From one of the referenced links: [1] Although Thomas Cleary claims to have translated the Avatamsaka Sutra, he did not in fact do so.(For immense parts of the text, Cleary cuts out the...

Re: Source of Indra's Net?

If we're talking about Cleary's translation of the Avatamsaka, there have been known issues with that text for a while (big ones). As far as Rulu's translations: afaik, Rulu's books are thematic - introducing a topic and supporting it with smaller sutras and chapters from larger sutras. These transl...

Are we sure 法界 should be split? that is Dharmadhatu
That's what I thought too and the way I originally translated it, the split is just going by what I was able to get from SAT DB's inline dictionary.

Re: Source of Indra's Net?

https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/%E4%B8%AD 中 wouldn't typically modify the word following, but the word preceding. http://www.buddhism-dict.net/cgi-bin/xpr-ddb.pl?q=%E4%B8%AD From SATDB: 人中 - among human beings (rénzhōng) 一切法 all dharmas (yīqiè fǎ) 界中 in [this] world (jièzhōng) EDIT: I think Cleary ad...

Re: Source of Indra's Net?

It is the 如 ("like", "as if", "thus", etc) after the 中 that makes me doubt "within". But like I said, my Chinese is hardly professional. I would never claim my own doodles are comparable work. "Thus" is definitely the basic meaning, but it goes deeper than that. Ref: http://www.buddhism-dict.net/cg...

Re: Source of Indra's Net?

The Chinese here is 中如因陀羅網, does why I said "middling as in" make more sense now? That is the proper reading for 中? 中 means "middle" yes, as in "middle kingdom", but it also means "within" or "throughout" and it's referring to the Dharma realm/universe (法界中). Dharmamitra's translation looks right t...

Visiting someone else's house, I'm on my best behaviour  Navigating the other areas of the forum can be tricky, but definitely with the Zen subforums we're trying to create a place for Zen folks to share their thoughts freely, without fear of reprisal (unless of course it violates more gener...

Re: Single practice schools

PorkChop could give more info on this. About the only thing I would add is that ShanTao's focus on the idea of senju or "exclusivity" and focus on single practice goes all the way back to the Shorter Sukhavati Sutra (again with the emphasis being "single practice for a particular goal - being born ...
