Wow! Amazing find!
Thanks for sharing, that's probably my favorite lecture I've seen yet.
Feel a little bit vindicated that I'm not the only one that saw the stark differences between the Tannisho and the rest of Shinran's works. Learned a lot from that video.

Re: Is Shen Shi'an 沈时安 a cult teacher?
I've found a few of Shen Shi'an's teachings questionable, borderline superstition, and I find his sectarianism unpalatable - but I don't think I'd go so far as to call him a cult teacher. I'm wondering if this is related to the shots Shen Shi'an has taken at the Pristine Pure Land school over on the...

Re: Shoko Asahara's last nembutsu.
IIRC Asahara was responsible for a lot more than just the sarin attacks. Think he should definitely say a/many Nembutsu. Whether or not he makes it to the Pure Land isn't up to me to speculate about, it's between him and Amida. Taking steps toward becoming a Buddha and rescuing all sentient beings w...

Re: Amida-Ji: Stop using Zen Masters explanations when referring to Amida Buddha - an example
But that's the whole point. When Amida just becomes some vague idea of an all-pervasive self/universe and "reliance" is redefined as manifesting Buddha qualities, then the entire teaching loses all meaning. If we were capable of manifesting Buddha qualities, aka "function through [one's] own body, s...

Re: Amida-Ji: Stop using Zen Masters explanations when referring to Amida Buddha - an example
I am little confused, was Kawaki speaking for Jodo/Shin-shu or Pure Land practice? Or his own (modernist?) practice? or Zen-shu? Is the author bothered by Jodo-Shin-Shu folks reposting a Zen-shu interpretation of Pure Land practice? Or is the author worried that Jodo-Shin-Shu practitioners are beli...

Re: Genshin, Ojoyoshu and Pure Land
Do you mean the Mukaeko of the Kedai'in? Yeah I think that's the one. Why not get Rhodes's book from library loan, I'm sure that a uni near you has it and Ch 11 Honen's Appropriation of the Ojoyoshu would of course be of great interest to you. My problem is that I have a ridiculous backlog of books...

Re: Genshin, Ojoyoshu and Pure Land
Found some of what I was thinking of: "Ch 2 - With the Help of 'Good Friends' - Deathbed Ritual Practices in Early Medieval Japan by Jacqueline I. Stone (this should've been my first thought). Stumbled across this too: Preparing for the Pure Land in Late Tenth-Century Japan - by Richard Bowring - Ja...

Re: Genshin, Ojoyoshu and Pure Land
Rhodes teaches at Otani a Shinshu sect University, he also critiques Andrews reading and understanding of Genshin, in his book pp. 138-9 and more. Interesting, I've been meaning to get that book. Been trying to track down this description of Genshin's elaborate Pure Land ceremonies that aristocrats...

Re: Genshin, Ojoyoshu and Pure Land
Popularly known as Genshin (942-1017), the high-ranking Buddhist prelate Eshin Sozu was said to have been born following his devout mother’s prayers to the Kannon of Takaoji Temple in Taima, Nara Prefecture. Genshin began the road to monkhood in youth, studying at Kyoto’s Enryakuji Temple on Mount ...

Re: Genshin, Ojoyoshu and Pure Land
Genshin (942-1017), also called Eshin Sozu, wrote the Ojoyoshu in 985, at the age of forty-four. Honen wrote four commentaries on the Ojoyoshu, an index to the importance he placed upon this work. The Ojoyoshu, in ten chapters, consists of a collection of passages from sutras and commentaries regar...

Re: Some Reflections on Shantao and Honen
What precisely is inaccurate? My claim was that one's entire practice makes up a network of development as a whole. You are saying that Tendai rejects this claim? Contrary to popular belief, Tendai was not some big, broad study curriculum that included everything. Furthermore, their Pure Land teach...

Re: Some Reflections on Shantao and Honen
But then the question arises as to why Honen would need to establish Jodo shu as distinct from Tendai, as this is surely accepted in Tendai shu as well. That's not accurate. The Tendai approach to Pure Land is different, with a lot of stress on visualizations and continuous walking meditation pract...

Re: Some Reflections on Shantao and Honen
Thanks for your comments Admin. Actually, I only mentioned building stupas as one example of the "sundry/miscellaneous" practices. I think the core of what I am trying to suggest is that I don't see the sutra as suggesting the disposal of the sundry practices in favour of the nembutsu. It would be ...

Re: Request: clear explanation of the nature of Sukhavati or a "pure land" in general
A pure land could also be called a Buddha-field. Which in itself is an extension of the mind of a Buddha (or generated by but in itself identical to). Is this correct? Yes, that pretty much sums it up. Buddhism (of just about all flavors) has the teachings that mind is the forerunner of all experie...

Re: Some Reflections on Shantao and Honen
1. Chapter 2 -- The Right and Miscellaneous Practices: Here it seems to me that Shantao is over-emphasizing the amount of focus on the Nembutsu that the sutra is requiring of the practitioner which leads him to suggest the rejection of all other practices. The emphasis on the name is indeed importa...
