Re: Pure Land practice and Vajrayana (HYT)

Actually the requirements are less than that. Merely aspiring to be born there with a sincere wish is said to be enough in the sutra. Preaching otherwise is considered by many of the Pure Land schools to not only be incorrect, but dangerous. I know the sutra. Lack of merit will hinder rebirth in we...

Re: Pure Land practice and Vajrayana (HYT)

The issue of whether Samaya breakers can be reborn in the Pure Land is cut and dried from the Pure Land side. It is entirely possible. Breaking Samaya is not one of the 5 grave offenses (Ānantarika-karma) so there's not even a debate. Even if it qualified as one of the 5 grave offenses, any school ...

Re: Pure Land practice and Vajrayana (HYT)

However, i do note the danger of thinking that reciting amitofo only and alone is sufficient to be reborn in Sukhavati. Actually the requirements are less than that. Re: Pure Land practice and Vajrayana (HYT)

Also as an aside, read some Ippen Shonin. Not directly relevant perhaps but there is an influence in his writing from more "esoteric" schools, and I found him really inspirational, almost like a PL wandering yogi. What would you recommend? Kirt No Abode: The Record of Ippen is really the only book ...

Re: Pure Land practice and Vajrayana (HYT)

I feel I am not ready for tantra. I feel I'm Shin Buddhist. I think I'm ready only for Amitabha sutra. I think I rushed to inner tantra initiation. I can practice only chanting of name. I'm so simple. Tantra is too complicated for me. I can rely only on exclusively other-power. Self-power is not fo...

Re: Proper recitation for nembutsu

Sorry. Best I got is a full service. Around 12:06 there's a Namo Shakyamunaye Buddhaya chant that has a similar cadence - but not exactly the same rhythm.

Re: Proper recitation for nembutsu

we practice longer, slower, rhythmic chant of "Namo Amitabha Buddha". I'm very curious where they are doing this. It's a Vietnamese Tiantai temple. It's the main temple I go to locally, but they changed their service times before I moved back so I rarely have the opportunity to practice there anymo...

Re: Dharmavidya's Authorization to teach

Seems dubious. Kevin... Not disagreeing in regards to the service book. My post is a quote from Brazier's post on the Order of Buddhist Contemplative's forum - literally the forum for the organization founded by Jiyu Kennett Roshi. I trust that much of his story is true, as the forum is frequented ...

Re: Dharmavidya's Authorization to teach

I think originally he was a student of Houn Jiyu-Kennett. In his own words: I was a disciple of Reverend Master Jiyu Kennett - whom, in the early days we simply called Roshi - from 1972 until 1985. In 1977 I was ordained as Hakuun Homyo. I now use the name Dharmavidya in Buddhist circles. I met Rosh...
