Re: Proper recitation for nembutsu

Sorry. Best I got is a full service. Around 12:06 there's a Namo Shakyamunaye Buddhaya chant that has a similar cadence - but not exactly the same rhythm.

Re: Proper recitation for nembutsu

we practice longer, slower, rhythmic chant of "Namo Amitabha Buddha". I'm very curious where they are doing this. It's a Vietnamese Tiantai temple. It's the main temple I go to locally, but they changed their service times before I moved back so I rarely have the opportunity to practice there anymo...

Oh I just meant his authorization to teach tantric practices like the 100 syllable mantra, etc.

Ah, thanks for the clarification!

Re: Dharmavidya's Authorization to teach

Seems dubious. Kevin... Not disagreeing in regards to the service book. My post is a quote from Brazier's post on the Order of Buddhist Contemplative's forum - literally the forum for the organization founded by Jiyu Kennett Roshi. I trust that much of his story is true, as the forum is frequented ...

Re: Dharmavidya's Authorization to teach

I think originally he was a student of Houn Jiyu-Kennett. In his own words: I was a disciple of Reverend Master Jiyu Kennett - whom, in the early days we simply called Roshi - from 1972 until 1985. In 1977 I was ordained as Hakuun Homyo. I now use the name Dharmavidya in Buddhist circles. I met Rosh...

Re: Mark Blum - "Critically Reading the Tannisho"

Wow! Amazing find!
Thanks for sharing, that's probably my favorite lecture I've seen yet.

Feel a little bit vindicated that I'm not the only one that saw the stark differences between the Tannisho and the rest of Shinran's works. Learned a lot from that video.

Re: Is Shen Shi'an 沈时安 a cult teacher?

I've found a few of Shen Shi'an's teachings questionable, borderline superstition, and I find his sectarianism unpalatable - but I don't think I'd go so far as to call him a cult teacher. I'm wondering if this is related to the shots Shen Shi'an has taken at the Pristine Pure Land school over on the...

Re: Shoko Asahara's last nembutsu.

IIRC Asahara was responsible for a lot more than just the sarin attacks. Think he should definitely say a/many Nembutsu. Whether or not he makes it to the Pure Land isn't up to me to speculate about, it's between him and Amida. Taking steps toward becoming a Buddha and rescuing all sentient beings w...

Re: Amida-Ji: Stop using Zen Masters explanations when referring to Amida Buddha - an example

But that's the whole point. When Amida just becomes some vague idea of an all-pervasive self/universe and "reliance" is redefined as manifesting Buddha qualities, then the entire teaching loses all meaning. If we were capable of manifesting Buddha qualities, aka "function through [one's] own body, s...

Re: Amida-Ji: Stop using Zen Masters explanations when referring to Amida Buddha - an example

I am little confused, was Kawaki speaking for Jodo/Shin-shu or Pure Land practice? Or his own (modernist?) practice? or Zen-shu? Is the author bothered by Jodo-Shin-Shu folks reposting a Zen-shu interpretation of Pure Land practice? Or is the author worried that Jodo-Shin-Shu practitioners are beli...
