Re: Amida's death?

There's another article that backs that up (might be related to the Amitayus being a mistranslation of the Gandharan that you mentioned elsewhere): https://www.jstor.org/stable/24049429?seq=1#page_scan_tab_contents In the article they say it's T362. Could've also possibly been T361. I don't doubt th...

Re: Amida's death?

OK, I understand this, but does that mean that not all of Amidas vows are fulfilled?? The 13th specifically says his lifespan will be never ending... I would say "no, they were fulfilled" because a Buddha no longer identifies with the 5 aggregates subject to perishing (ie Nirmanakaya form). The Lif...

Re: Amida's death?

Yes. Sambhogakayas are conditioned bodies, if far more pure than gross phenomenal bodies like these. This might depend on source and school. There are definitely schools that say that Sambhogakayas have no end. One place says it's the samadhi of the Buddhas. Another place says that it's the essence...

Re: Amida's death?

While the Dharma dispensation of Amida is still active in the world, it is safe to assume that the vows would still be in effect: "The number of sentient beings that will be delivered will equal that during His life. After Amitābha’s parinirvāṇa, some sentient beings there will not be able to see a ...

Re: Amida's death?

The sutra also says that those who possess the Thinking-of-Buddhas Samādhi (nembutsu sanmai) will never stop seeing him. Also, in Mahayana, parinirvana is something Buddhas display as a lesson on impermanence. According to the Lotus Sutra, Shakyamuni is still teaching on Vulture Peak. So it's not li...

Re: Edgar here, why are you?

On the other hand, I can tell my style is not welcome, at least by the most active moderators. My apologies for the harm caused and thank you all those who gave the time and energy to share something about their forum experience and their practice. I don't think it's that serious. This is a fairly ...

Re: Edgar here, why are you?

My intention was not to debate anything, only to ask why are people here and how their forum activities impact their lives. Discussing sutras can be a wonderful thing, it can also lead to confusion or just waste people's time. Each to their own as long as we have our eyes open. The bolded sentence ...

Re: A Butcher Lays Down His Knife and Becomes a Buddha

Interesting fact: some later sectarians misunderstood this story and spread the rumor that ShanTao himself fell off that tree, and did so purposely, committing suicide.

Re: Heavens/Hells/Purelands

Its difficult to unify Sukhavati idea with big bang and so on. If we accept that Sukahavati is real, that means (for me) that it is in other dimension, out of this physical Universe. Makes sense in the same way that hell realms are not buried in a specific mountain (as is described in certain sutra...

Re: Position of dharanis in service?

Looking at the Buddhist Liturgy available from budaedu.org, the Morning Service has the following order: 1. Incense offering 2. The Sitatapatrosnisa (Surangama) Dharani 3. Dharani of the Most Compassionate One (Great Compassion Mantra) 4. 10 short Dharani 5. Heart Sūtra 6. Parinamana Gatha 7. Praise...

Re: Heavens/Hells/Purelands

I think that altought Sukhavati cannot be reached be physical means, that doesnt mean that Sukhavati is not real or less "physical" than our reality. ... I suppose that if Sukhavati is for real, so that means that it is more real and wakefull than our dully and gross lives like 21st century earthli...

Re: What a buddhist tradition did you choose and why?

Finding the tradition that fits right can be difficult. While it may not be a unique issue faced by modern day converts, there really do seem to be more options than ever before. Finding an authentic teacher and sticking with the practice, consistently is probably the best advice - especially if the...
