Re: Criticism of Prayer Flags, Treasure Vases, etc.

I'm not threatened by science, as Buddhists we should have confidence in Buddhist methods and teachers. Otherwise you take refuge in science. If one should forgo medical treatment, say for cancer, because accepting medical treatment somehow means one lacks faith in the Dharma, then one is a fool. T...

Re: Criticism of Prayer Flags, Treasure Vases, etc.

it's not only that he is criticizing the wrong application of the practices, since he prefaces it with believe in science and do away with superstitious beliefs, so he is directly calling these profound skillful means left behind by Guru Rinpoche as superstitious and not effective. When great lamas...

Re: Criticism of Prayer Flags, Treasure Vases, etc.

You might try aiming first before pulling the trigger... The emphasis of his argument seems displaced, and his logic twisted and underdeveloped. He is emphasizing that is it "Fake lama's" who spread these practices, and that they are merely superstitious. however it is a dishonest emphasi...

Re: Does the Mo Divination System Require Empowerment?

Loppon-la, good story, and definitely to the point. H.H. Sakya Trizin is Manjushri. In the pra bab/mirror divination system that Lama Dawa Chodrak practiced, there are three levels of accomplishment. The first two need the mirror, but the third does not. Towards the end of His life, Lama Dawa would...

Re: Comparison of Kagyu and Gelug schools?

Gelug emphasizes extensive general Mahayana and Sutrayana from the Kadam tradition before Vajrayana. Kagyu emphasizes Vajrayana practices, in retreat when possible. General Mahayana and Sutrayana from the Kadam tradition do exist, but they don’t have the same emphasis. Both have Sarma Tantras and t...

Re: Does the Mo Divination System Require Empowerment?

So I went back and looked in my list of empowerments and transmissions and see that I have received the Manushri mantra several times as a simple lung. I can see having the lung for the Manjushri mantra being useful for this system, but still can't find a definitive answer on it being required. Whe...

Re: Doubts on Samaya and Empowerment

Greetings everyone. Just for a brief context, I’m still finding my way on buddhism and pretty much divided if I should follow zen or vajrayana traditions, anyway... So, a few days ago I saw that would be happening a transmission of a prayer to Manjushri, given by HH Sakya Trichen. By being just tha...

Patrul Rinpoche, Sakya Pandita, Dzigar Kongtrul Rinpoche, Khenchen Namdrol Rinpoche, Dungse Shenpen Dawa Norbu Rinpoche, His Holiness the 17th Karmapa orgyen trinley dorje, Phagchok Rinpoche, Lama Zopa Rinpoche. The list grows of masters who say they are Sentient, I see little point on being on the ...

Re: Are Oysters Sentient? (Split from Giving up Masturbation)

Shucking oysters kills them immediately. But they are not sentient, so it’s moot. Most of the pearls one sees in Tibetan monasteries are of the freshwater variety. They certainly didn’t get their on their own. While I respect Sapan for his views on Dharma, his grasp of biology was a bit more shaky....

Re: Chappelle's The Closer

As long as people are not intentionally trying to disrespect of cause suffering to another, and yet I hear in conversations that if someone doesn't agree with one about ones view on gender and sex, This is indeed the central point. Too often, people ARE intentionally trying to be disrespectful and ...

Re: Chappelle's The Closer

I don't believe anyone should be potentially jailed if they do not believe in the reality of Ze zer zey zed etc and refuse to use it. Let's set aside the legality (though, I'm a lawyer, and yeah, contempt is a thing. But as Kathy points out, that doesn't mean that the underlying conduct is a crime,...

Re: Chappelle's The Closer

Since you are familiar, can you summarize? You specifically brought it up earlier. If you look up the wiki on Compelled Speech it mentions this specifically, and that legal authorities refuted his claims. In short, it was mainly good publicity for him. the 6 min video is about as short as I think i...

Re: Chappelle's The Closer

Right , I didn’t ask about Peterman though, rather about actual enforceable laws on the books. Jordy launched part of his career on that conflict, so I can’t see him as anything other than duplicitous in his outrage. He's talking about enforceable laws in that video. Since you are familiar, can you...

Re: Chappelle's The Closer

I’d like to know where there are actual enforceable laws regarding pronouns, since that was a claim made. I have no interest in defending peterson, because I do not particularly like him nor find him easy to listen to which is why I didn't link to him. However, he has talked about it ad nauseum in ...

I can understand that you are well intentioned, but Kathy you are wrong here, an I would strongly suggest doing your research. I would respectfully suggest that I know rather a lot more about transgender issues than you do. they are making laws ( in canada I believe) where experts 'have' to only af...

Re: Chappelle's The Closer

If you think that a 7 year old is capable of making a decision of full permanent gender transitioning, I'm sorry, but you are sick in the head. Like it's one thing for a person to mature and find out who they are, especially post adolescence. Quite another to completely redefine a person's identity...

Re: Chappelle's The Closer

Chappelle's just a deeply conservative muslim dude - not sure what he has to say that's so interesting. He was funny 15 years ago. I didn’t really find the show that funny. Or shocking. For actual comedy, check out Paul Mooney, Analyzing White America, imo. He’s like Chappelle’s hero. Love Mooney :...
