Re: Is it ok to practice Vajrasattva mantra meditation without oral transmission
You might just try making general bodhicitta aspirations, then aspirations to practice vajrayana for the benefit of beings, and vajrasattva in particular, and then shamatha. Honestly you can't go wrong laying a foundation of shamatha w aspirations, then see how your karma presents.

Re: How to learn simple tsok practice
Is there a simple way to do tsok that is either Prajnaparamita -based or ok to learn at a distance? There is no tsok that is Prajñapāramita based, as that is sūtra. You only need to do tsok at beginning and end of your retreat, and on special days. You can probably find a short Tsog at Lotsawa hous...

Re: How to learn simple tsok practice
Thank you. Am I understanding correctly, that a practice like this:https://shop.fpmt.org/Lama-Chopa-and-Tsog-Offering-eBook-PDF_p_1949.html is basically an open practice, and anyone can run through the liturgy and it will be considered effective in mending that one's spiritual affairs? What other pr...

How to learn simple tsok practice
Hello- I’m going into a short personal retreat, following my teacher’s instructions. I would like to learn a simple tsok to enhance my retreat, but don’t have a 1:1 relationship w my teacher, so haven’t been able to receive tsok instruction. Is there a simple way to do tsok that is either Prajnapara...

Re: We Are All This Luminous Mind
To follow up on that and hopefully sort of close the circle, yes, imv kensho is recognition. The role and function of kensho in the Rinzai practice communities I've been a part of is cognate to the role and function of recognition in hybrid dzogchen-mahamudra communities I've been a part of. It's ba...

Roger Jackson’s recent book, Mind Seeing Mind is specifically about the Gelug Mahamudra, but it’s full of stuff that I bet would be interesting to you in this context.

Re: Theravadin Looking to Learn
Paul Williams’ Mahayana Buddhism is an excellent survey. Theravada has all sorts of “far out” elements too, but you’ve received a modernized version. This is fine and skillful imo. Modern Zen offers something very similar from Mahayana roots. Tibetan Buddhism has not made the same moves exactly- the...

Familiarization with the nature of mind is fine, but I like pickling in the dharmakaya.

The vulture wing cue is just meant to indicate that the shoulder blades should be wide and sustainably relaxed, with even energetic extension, like a vulture spending all day on a draft. A really useful cue if you’re meditating all day every day for weeks and months on end.

Re: Giving Up Masturbation
I love oysters, but I’ve pretty much given them up- when you shuck them, they fight to close and stay closed, until you disable them by cutting a little membrane at the base. Just hard for me to square w the first precept. They seem to want to live. There are vegetarians and vegans who have felt tha...

She’s connected to the eco-philosopher Timothy Morton, who studies dzogchen with Tsoknyi Rinpoche. I’d be shocked if she hasn’t had some exposure to those teachings.

Geoffrey Samuel’s Origins of Yoga and Tantra is exquisite, as are Davidson’s Indian Esoteric Buddhism and Tibetan Renaissance. If you want something more accessible, Reggie Ray’s Indestructible Truth and Secrets of the Vajra World are good. https://www.amazon.com/Origins-Yoga-Tantra-Religions-Thirte...

Re: [Mod note: AFAIK, Vase Breathing is a higher practice that should be shown and taught by an experienced teacher to students who are ready for it. If the Shugendo angle is interesting to you, look on FB and Google for the International Shugendo Association. (The Seattle Shugendo dojo is connected to them.) The head of ISA is a Tendai priest, so there will be a Hokke link there, though I haven’t seen anything specifically on the subject.
