Re: C.S. Lewis and Shin

Thank you for an informative and intelligent post, steveb1.

I wonder to why extent this difference Kim picks up on, between self- and other-power, is real?

What are your thoughts on that?

Re: The hearer and the sound?

I think it helps us to understand the division of subject and object essentially is self. One Zen master (forgot name) said, “It took me 40 years to smash it into one piece.” Since we are discussing sound is mind, the training is the to dissolve the arising of subject and object to what’s left is j...

Re: The hearer and the sound?

Practicing with hearing is cool. Drop all concepts and just focus on the sound. Bring all the energy and attention to it that you can. Where is it perceived? See if you can notice the awareness of the sound as it first arises. Where is this awareness? Who is aware? Discussing it seems to me to be o...

Discussing it seems to me to be of no use really.
I have nothing to say / and I am saying it / and that is poetry

John Cage
I don't know if it is. I guess writing John Cage at the end makes it.

I just shared some instructions I was given. Don't think that amounted to discussion though

Re: Discrimination is self

Discriminative consciousness is often mentioned in Zen teachings as something to let go of. From Seng Tsan's Faith in Heart-Mind to Master Sheng-Yen, it is something usually tainted by grasping, predicated on dualism.

Re: Animal Activist: Let Mosquitoes Bite You As They Are "Mothers" Trying To Feed Their Babies

Lyme disease is treatable with antibiotics, unless noticed too late. I got it in my first year here (Switzerland a.k.a. Tick HQ) - what looked like a mossie bite on my foot (never saw the tick) which didn't go away but grew bigger with a typical target look (a red ring around the red spot of the bit...

I mostly agree with Matylda and think she makes very important and rarely heard points. The one point I don't agree with is: Not if you find that your teacher is doing something completely inappropriate like taking sexual advantage of women, etc, etc. Then, most everyone can see they have "fallen ou...

Re: Are there any western lineages of Seon other than Kwan Um?

Hanmaum Seon Center has one branch in Canada and 4 in the US (LA, NYC, DC and Chicago). I don't know if they are mostly Westerners or Korean immigrants. I visited their head temple in Anyang, near Seoul, to attend a Dharma talk given by an American monk, which he delivered in both English and Korea...

Re: Integrity and The Wild Things...

HI, Dan, I think your post would have made much more sense if you left out this: In Western literature, there are related archetypes of the Saint and the Beast, as in Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde and Steppenwolf, which both depict man caught between two seemingly opposed natures. Why? Because the rest of ...

Integrity and The Wild Things...

In Mahayana, there are two teacher archetypes - the saint and the crazy wisdom guru. One of the defining characteristics of the saint to me, is integrity. Real moral fibre and rectitude. It is an unfashionable trait, held as unrealistic, rigid and not-really-human these days, but very prominent in a...

Re: The ‘feel-good’ horror of late-stage capitalism

Well, yes and no. Sure the system sucks in many ways and can and should be improved. At the same time, people buckling down and doing their best under the circumstances, rather than delegating all responsibility for their fate to the unjust system is an inspirational thing. It has become de rigeur t...

Re: Observation = Ego?

Prakṛtiśūnyatā corresponds to Avyakta Prakṛti https://www.wisdomlib.org/definition/prakritishunyata No it does not. Prakṛtiśūnyatā refers to the emptiness (dependently arisen nature) of form. Avyakta Prakṛti rfers to form that has yet to be manifested. You are way off-topic and not addressing the O...

Re: Observation = Ego?

If I undestand you correctly, you're wondering about the observer. In meditation, at least in the first few years, most people have this observer watching what they experience, looking behind, looking ahead, and the quality of the actual experience is kinda subdued, dull. The observer is a fiction, ...

Re: Does zen have anything similar to dream yoga?

From memory there is a koan (or a mondo) where this comes up. A student claims that he has it and the teacher asks whether he has it when he dreams and even in dreamless sleep. Perhaps someone can supply the reference. Is your practice already so solid in waking hours that sleep is now the issue? Or...

Re: Trans surgery on children

What worries me is the binary thinking that one must be this or that, the labeling and the need to 'fix'.

There are a lot of assumptions behind this that imo dont get questioned enough.
