So long and thanks for all the fish

Many thanks and a heartfelt gratitude to all those who've interacted and shared with me in good faith. I've learned a lot from you and about myself, by being here. After some 10 years and some 3000 posts here, it would feel strange without saying 'goodbye' and leaving a forwarding address. Take care...

Re: Is kensho stream entry?

Thank you for this, Astus. One of the things I am not clear about is whether according to the Theravada, stream-enterers can regress and lose some of these qualities. The Chan definition you quoted above doesn't appear to distinguish between (insight into the Original Nature) kensho and full awakeni...

Re: Is kensho stream entry?

It would be worth comparing the descriptions of each. Unfortunately I don't have time for this right now and would not want to paraphrase from memory. Perhaps Astus or another scholarly member can oblige?

Maybe Malcolm's understanding of what attaining stream entry entails differs from that of Ven. Sheng-Yen and Guo Gu? I mean he has shown siddhis and all...

Re: the Zen promise is empty

I am sure I am speaking out of turn here, but Zen Buddhism has its own history and vocabulary, doesn't it? When Guo Gu or other teachers mention their realisations, these should be discussed (if at all) in reference to what their statements mean within their own traditions, not Theravada, Vajrayana,...

Recovering slowly, thanks. They are talking of sending me home later today or tomorrow. It can’t come a moment too soon!

Re: For myself

Thanks again, everyone. I did finally get transported to the city. Now, I wait for my surgeon to evaluate the X-rays and decide what needs to be done. Are there any news about what it is? Do they still think it's covid? It isn’t Covid. I have had enough negative tests to know that. It just ha...

Most convincing rebirths I have seen have been into coffee. Even the Cookie Monster... I guess it will keep him close to his favourite thing..

A rare sunny day (yesterday!)

After the endless days of rain The sun broke through the clouds at last. I lubed my motorbike’s chain, put my gear on And rode off for the curvy country roads. Green fields and blue skies Danced arounds me, as the road twisted and turned And then… four bucks streaked through the meadows. I stopped a...

Re: Brad warner's view on enlightened people as 'empty'?

It might be worth looking at the Ox-herding pictures. There is one with Emptiness, no man, no ox. If one is stuck there, well... yeah, one's not really human anymore. But then, there's Returning to the Marketplace with open arms. At that stage, it seems to me, one is open and ready to serve. Sure, o...

Re: Opinions on the school system?

US kids are different, how exactly? The maths they learn or should be learning is different, how exactly? Dan, you have no idea how bad education in this country is at the primary and secondary level. How unequal it is from district to district. And don't get me started on the college loan scam. I ...

When you look at who the political proponents of charter schools are, it’s easy to reach that conclusion. The countries with the best performing Educaiton systems all have very strong, nationally standardized public school systems. US politicians would learn a lot about public service provision by ...
