Re: Looking ahead...(split from ZFI topic)

Hi jinglebell (what was your previous nik?) Yes, I agree. Although I was never on the E-Sangha staff, I remember a great deal of displeasure and censure of things like a modern Zen understanding of "monk", notions like post-mortem rebirth and permanent nirvana and the like. Truth be told, there is a...

Re: A Mind for Numbers: How to Excel at Math and Science (Even If You Flunked Algebra)

Could you give some more details please? I'm a maths teacher and I'm wondering whether it has something I can incorporate in the lessons.

Re: What is a Woman?

Jesse, over the years I've come to appreciate your intelligent and sincere posts. And lord knows, I've felt the way you describe in your post above. Sometimes it's time to take time off Fora (I'm entering a superbusy work/study period for instance). And sometimes it's just time to step back and exam...

Re: Allow myself to introduce myself.

Would you share a bit more about the cult you were raised in, Drenpa? I'm generally interested cults, how they function and sustain themselves. I find thrm often to be an extreme case if the dynamic one finds in many more benign groups.

Re: Can other religions/philosophies/practises complement Buddhadharma?

To identify oneself with the particular is all the sin there is. The impersonal is real, the personal appears and disappears. "I am" is the impersonal Being. "I am this" is the person. The person is relative, and the pure Being fundamental. This is completely incompatible with dependent origination...

Re: Can other religions/philosophies/practises complement Buddhadharma?

Probably because I am a relative newcomer to Buddhism (I became a Theravadan Buddhist in mid-2013 and I am an entirely self taught Buddhist) I do not yet subscribe to such a rigid view. Perhaps in time I will. You need a teacher. That I do. Fully agree. But I am unable to due to geography. Thailand...

Re: Can other religions/philosophies/practises complement Buddhadharma?

No Mind, I find the approach as outlined here quite rigid as well. Life/spiritual practice are organic, not formulaic. Signposts (as in the Dharma) and one-to-one guidance from a teacher who knows your heart are vital, I agree, but any dogmatic approach as to what one needs (without even knowing whe...

Prayers for Grigoris's Brother

I've just heard that Grigoris has had to urgently fly to London to see his brother who's had a massive heart attack. The prospects are not good. Some may be moved to say a few words of prayer or send a personal message of support. May they both be well. May Greg's brother, if he passes away, encount...

Re: Former Pentagon UFO official: 'We may not be alone'

People theoretically have a lot more choices now (not sure why you brought Freud into this) which is a good thing, but we are also more neurotic, disconnected and overcome by a sense of valuelessness and futility, it seems. So much within our grasp, and all of it just seems like pointless shite.

Re: Former Pentagon UFO official: 'We may not be alone'

Agreed. I suppose all of the blockbusters depicting the alien-apocalypse really left a mark on him. But are you really so sure of that? Think about it. There are in general two classes of beings: 1) Sentient beings, 2) Buddhas. As for sentient beings, they are deluded, and are swimming in afflictio...

Re: Hello All

Welcome, No Mind. Not sure how representative the Forums are of any branches of Buddhism. It's a bit like a flea market or a trash and treasure box. Lots of discarded thoughts, with a very occasional collectible. Good luck assembling a reliable picture out of it. I'd first suggest reading some intro...

Re: What is a Woman?

Whether identifying with one's sex at birth, or being transgender or queer, the biggest issue today seems to me that we've largely forgotten what it means to have a healthy balanced identity. Many clutch at the Dharma and especially at the no-self teaching as a purported solace to this deep identity...

Re: Standing Meditation

The great Korean Zen master Kusan Sunim had his first breakthrough while doing long standing meditation. It is in one of his books, either Nine Mountains or The Way of Korean Zen. Specifically he did it because his meditation was so poor that he kept falling asleep. And he had promised his friend, a...

Re: Wiccan arts and the Mahayana

Further to Jeff's post, there is this great old Chinese story: "The Eight Winds Cannot Move Me" Su Dongpo (a famous Buddhist poet) of the Song Dynasty was assigned to an official post at Guazhuo, which was situated at the northern shore of the Yangtze River. Across the river, on its southern shore, ...

Re: Wiccan arts and the Mahayana

You can just play D&D, imagine yourself an enlightened wizard and go to Alternative Music festivals (they dance naked). Might satisfy most of your wishes better than either Wicca and Vajrayana. These are all wishes and fantasies that the self produces out of desire and wanting to be more special. Bu...

Re: Zen Space Forum down hard?

This is an option (and has its advantages) but some also see good reasons for having a dedicated Zen forum, as has been discussed in a number of threads here. It's kind of like having your party at one small table in a busy noisy restaurant, or one at a cosy little café that you've booked for the oc...
