Re: US and Allies Launch Strikes on Syria

We have a free press in the US. CNN, Fox, MSNBC are not the press. Oh you mean as long as you have no perceptible influence, you can say what you want. Russia has such freedoms as well. See Novaya Gazeta, for instance. Again, overall the US has more freedoms, no doubt for me, but... Maybe worth it ...

Re: US and Allies Launch Strikes on Syria

Again the unnecessary comparison to Russia only underscore the paucity of the argument. Russia does not have free media, no one seriously pretends that it does. But intelligent people like Malcolm still apparently think that the US media are free. The groupthink they exhibit on a whole host of issu...

Re: US and Allies Launch Strikes on Syria

Given American faux democracy and Russian illiberal one, I guess I would take the former, because of better tolerance of freedom of thought and expression and somewhat better protection of individual rights. But of course both are deeply flawed so... (Mind you, Malcolm, the recently deceased/murdere...

Re: US and Allies Launch Strikes on Syria

What do you feel? I feel curious about why people find claims such as the Syrian chemical weapons attack was orchestrated by the West convincing, and what genuine sentiments by Americans and non-Americans about the imperfections of democracy and internationalism are being exploited by autocrats thr...

Re: Is it good not to exist?

Good answers above. My teacher said once that before we can let go of the self, we need to develop a well-adjusted strong sense of self. Too often one longs to escape the burdens of existence - this is still very much on the Wheel of Samsara of wanting and aversion. I think it helps at the ver...

Re: Have you changed Buddhist schools since joining DW?

Thank you very much, those who've completely the poll and those who've commented! 40 poll answers is not bad, but not a large sample for a Forum like this. Maybe a few more could answer quickly? What's the rush? If we get enough votes, Dan will switch to practicing Dzogchen  :jumping: :twis...

Re: Greetings from Cape Cod MA

Besides meditation I find it useful to practice breath awareness, mindfulness or mantra recitation throughout the day, prostrations, cultivating loving kindness and wholesome habits in small things we do towards developing the Six Paramitas.

Welcome to DW, Lisa.

Re: Looking ahead...(split from ZFI topic)

I remember a great deal of displeasure and censure of things like a modern Zen understanding of "monk", You don't recall the context. So let me recall it for you. In a diverse forum with many different traditions, people were becoming quite confused as to what constituted a "monk." Many people were...

Hi jinglebell (what was your previous nik?) Yes, I agree. Although I was never on the E-Sangha staff, I remember a great deal of displeasure and censure of things like a modern Zen understanding of "monk", notions like post-mortem rebirth and permanent nirvana and the like. Truth be told, there is a...

Could you give some more details please? I'm a maths teacher and I'm wondering whether it has something I can incorporate in the lessons.
