Re: Wolff book about Trump

The president of the U$ does not need to be smart or competent, he jut needs the support of (and to support) the most powerful lobby groups. A charismatic (or in this case: anti-charismatic) bumbling idiot, is more valuable than a competent and intelligent stiff (cf Bernie Sanders). One could compa...

You might want to check out the German film Cherry Blossoms by the same director who made Enlightenment Guaranteed. A striking film (but not everyones cup of tea) with Butoh as a major theme.

Re: "Objectivity" and objective moral values

Perhaps rather than worrying about postulating 'objective moral values', we can think in terms of a moral framework, like the ToS on a Forum - a set of principles best designed to foster the kind of personal growth, society and environment that we find to be desirable, to be of value. What I observe...

Re: Sexuality, Marriage, Promiscuity and the Dharma

Intelligent skepticism is only ever applied to other people's beliefs. You should know that. When the Chinese were dismayed that they could not find any mention of such things as filial piety and so on, they composed sūtras to reinforce those values. And how do we Fair Folk know that the Pali redact...

Re: Very sad news: Letter to Sogyal Rinpoche / Abuse allegations

From Patrul Rinpoche in “Words of my Perfect Teacher" A Millstone of Wood The first kind of teacher to be avoided is the teacher who is like a millstone of wood, which looks like a genuine millstone, but in actuality has no strength and no power. When a teacher has no strength of learning and no po...

Re: Wherever a Buddha appears - the world is purified

I thought Manhattan was already awash with wolves and coyotes, Wall St and all? :toilet: lol - indeed. Unfortunately, those wolves and coyotes are quite useless. Actually, they've been misidentified as wolves and coyotes. They're actually a type of vampire squid. They were correctly identified and ...

Then everyone in upstate NY must be enlightened, because the deer population is a positive road hazard there. Well, that would follow if deer ONLY gathered around enlightened beings, but that is not what QQ said. Did you and Ma visit the shrine? How was it? Upstate NY is kind of an emerging dharma ...

Re: Right Wing and Left Wing Totalitairianism and Fascism

Thanks, Malcolm, I'm familiar with the book and the widespread endorsement of the message. I think it's quite honest in what it does, but what it does, doesn't go far enough it seems to me. I don't know why Malcolm seems to warm up to Capitalism. Market economies function better than command economi...

Re: Right Wing and Left Wing Totalitairianism and Fascism

Nobody is saying that authoritarian communism is not murderous, this is a straw man Malcolm threw up in order to draw attention away from his claim that capitalist societies are not responsible for mass exterminations. A ludicrous claim. It goes without saying that authoritarians kill people, that ...

Sorry to butt in at this stage, but the 20 million directly killed by Stalin seems to be quite a stretch, Malcolm. I don't want to whitewash his crimes, but even Conquest's large estimate was 16mil and AFAIK there is no actual evidence to show that Stalin knew and understood of the catastrophic par...

Re: All is One

Ignorance and delusion are. Perceptions are not a problem in and of themselves. But even defilements aren't real when properly seen. They just seem real. Don't make two - you vs the senses, or you vs trouble, you vs defilements. But we need to learn to attend to the small details, carefully. Listeni...

The six senses bring pain. -A monk asked "What is one to do when the six thieves are laying siege to the house?" -The master replied: "They are members of one's own family." If you run from the six senses, you run further into delusion. _/|\_ Dan just Zen'd you. This is why he is a Zen Moderator ;)...

Re: Former Pentagon UFO official: 'We may not be alone'

In other words, even our conventional certainties are embedded in a much larger web of fundamental uncertainties. I don't think that needs to invalidate the value of conventional certainties, whether inferential or directly cognizable just as the perception of smoke on a mountain can lead us to inf...
