Re: The Decline and Fall of Chinese Buddhism

"Amoungst White Clouds" is like a companion movie to Porter's book. But the article in the OP was talking about prominent Chinese mainland Buddhist leaders and bemoaning that there really aren't any. The movie also makes that point since most/all of the people in that are relatively unknown people....

Getouttahere.. I am meant to name 5 teachers for you to attack? No, thanks. Just the two above who are already members here. Not dragging others into this. But yeah, you aint got nothin', buddy. You made the assertion that 'it didn't stay upped', that Joko Beck's work was 'mostly wasted' etc etc.. a...

Names or yr just asserting in a vacuum You made the original assertion. The onus is on you to back it up. But hey, I'm not a difficult guy. Just through these fora, I met two teachers who I believe are doing very good work - Guo Gu and Meido. I am sure there were others who for various reasons didn...

Re: Charlotte Joko Beck

I take it you don’t have Internet access Right. So you speak of Internet Zen? Some of the best teachers may have little to no web presence. But even as regards the ones who do, obviously they would be grossly overshadowed by the ones with all the notoriety, so it is easy to get the wrong impression...

Re: Dealing With Demons

I was curious about what different traditions of Buddhism say about "demonic" entities and how to deal with them. Always been interested in learning about the various types of beings mentioned in the sutras, but how does one deal with the nastier ones? In fact, knowing that Dharma protectors often ...

Re: Charlotte Joko Beck

Notice past tense. Zen has passed through an apocalypse. I could name two or three that aren’t dead, disgraced, or just boring. Don’t get me wrong, some of my best friends are dead, disgraced, or just boring. But really, anglophone zen is a dead letter for now at least. Yes, I get that this is what ...

who is teaching?
Was that meant in a "zennie" way, or a simple oversight?

Mostly wasted, I mean cmon. Who these days is doing anything more than receiving.
Why do you say that?

And yes, I also liked her work. As well as that of another Zen rebel, Toni Packer.

Re: Dalai Lama says 'Europe belongs to Europeans'

Of course, if European identity is even 'a thing', it is an extremely heterogenous diffuse 'thing'. And yet, there are such things like German cinema, Irish music, Greek cuisine, English humour, etc. There are within and between the nations, a diversity of cultural heritage that is surely worth pres...

Re: Dalai Lama says 'Europe belongs to Europeans'

I think what HH the Dalai Lama is saying is not quite realistic. When is this 'ultimately' he refers to? When their children are born in Europe, go to European schools, speak the local language better than the language of their parents, when the war in their country of origin is over, their should ...

I remember that book and remember finding it fun. Not sure how much it has to do with Buddhism. Lots of cool logical puzzles, patterns and self-references. Dennett's philosophy is rather dry though, from memory..

Re: Is lineage enough?

I've been following the dicussion about Nakpa International on another thread and the role of lineage. I, probably like most people here, would want to know that a teacher belongs to a bona fide lineage before seeking teachings from them. And I think this holds true for the major orthodox forms of ...

Re: Independent investigation confirms “physical, sexual, emotional abuse” by Sogyal Rinpoche

I don't remember hearing anyone claiming Harvey Weinstein was displaying crazy wisdom.. his victims may have been silenced/stayed silent for various reasons but I doubt any of them felt his exploitation was a display of kindness for their benefit. That to me differentiates cult vs. not. (Of course ...

Re: Caodong vs. Soto

I've sat with Soto groups and recently did a short Rinzai sesshin. So that makes me no kind of an expert. :D Firstly, my impression is that lineages matter. So Soto is not the same as Soto. And teachers matter too. Some teachers know little and share less, no matter how well meaning. But that's anot...

Power corrupts..

Funnily enough, my first Dharma talks were Sogyal and Ven. Sheng-yen who visited Melbourne within months of each other. Two almost diametrically opposed characters.

May the victims find healing and peace. And may he too..

Re: Neo nazi's march in DC

It's usually about the system. The leaders are products of the system. Plenty of talent in the US. Just not so much among Presidents. But regardless, as Sanders said once, whatever leader you elect, is pretry much bound by the system.

Re: Neo nazi's march in DC

Thank you for the detailed answer, QQ. (also thank you, Greg and PC, for replying and offering your perspectives). As an outsider, it seems to me that the growing rift in society and lack of interest in dialogue and genuine engagement feed this phenomenon. Of course, a 50-year-old man hardened in ha...

Re: Neo nazi's march in DC

Greg, do you really believe that most of those marchers would want to kill millions of people? Maybe I am just being naive, but to me, they are largely disgruntled and ignorant people, not psychopaths..
