Re: SN Goenka retreats

I was glad not to have 80 people blasting me with these "how rude" vibes for not entertaining them when my attention was on the meditation instruction. Old sudents, who have practices Goenka vipassana for years, that I've encountered before and after retreats are without exception far from antisoci...

Re: SN Goenka retreats

at such a retreat, the focus SHOULD be on your practice, but i don't think a simple smile or a nod of acknowledgement to a fellow human being would be such a terrible thing. lovingkindness, eh? ... to each his own, i suppose. oh...and another thing. it wasn't just your "fellow human beings" you were...

Re: SN Goenka retreats

Were you seriously forbidden to smile? i smiled to myself many times, to try to deal with over-all depressing vibe of the place, but to answer your question, they did not say "you are forbidden to smile" in those exact words, but it was implied. when they tell you to not make eye contact with anyon...

Re: SN Goenka retreats

don't waste your time. i went to one a few years ago, when i first got interested in buddhism. i was interested in theravada at that point in time, and it IS free, so i went. without going into a long-winded diatribe, i was creeped out by the whole experience. something screamed "wrong" right off th...

closed eyes vs. opened eyes

just curious... some meditation techniques will suggest the meditator keep his eyes opened, focusing on an object, while other techniques suggest the eyes be kept closed. i'm looking for some insight as to why this is and what is the benifit of one over the other. it is my (limited) experience that ...

quitting smoking - looking for inspiration

i have been fighting this battle for years. quit then start again - quit then start again - over & over for most of my adult life. any smoker or ex-smoker knows what i'm going through. i am now preparing to fight harder than ever before to FINALLY kick this addiction for good. i have a quit date set...
