Re: any fast way of burning up karma?

I was at the dentist for some surgery recently and mid surgery I started to feel anxiety rise so I stared chanting in my mind. Coolest thing is as the surgery got more intense I started chanting stuff from memory I often couldn't memorize because of difficulty. ... I see. That's wonderful, if it he...

Re: any fast way of burning up karma?

The antidote to anger is patience. So, a quick immediate remedy might be full prostrations. If you know, how to do them physically and mentally... I mean if you know how to recite the 35 Buddhas and you do no harm to your body by wrongly prostrating, then this might be a good practice. Good luck. i...

Re: No quote mark please

This request applies to all three of the Dharma boards. When quoting anything it looks like this: Buddha - Dharma - Sangha Since the quotation is surrounded by a contrasting color, is it possible to delete the beginning " 66 mark? AFAI understand, you are bothered because the quoting marks " look l...

Re: New rule: quote & comment?

How about: When quoting other people's work please provide your own comment about the quote? Perhaps in some cases (e.g., when starting a new thread)? Freestanding quotes may leave viewers guessing about the purpose of the post. Just want to check if the quotes are working for me? This is strange.

Re: What morning rituals do you have? How do you "use" your Buddhist shrine?

As Tibetan buddhist I try to practice giving. I offer bowls of water, imagining I give drink, washing water, flowers, incense, fragrance oils, food and music to all buddhas and bodhisattvas. It is like welcoming them. In the evening I empty the bowls just like shown in the video. The bowls on my shr...

Re: What we're reading - Split from "America is hooked on violence"

BTW, my favorite author is Amy Tan. She's American but her parents are Chinese. Every book tells about young American-Chinese women and their conflicts with their Chinese mothers who do not adjust to American way of life and thinking. Tan provides a loving insight into Chinese culture, generation co...

... Back to Dharma; 1 and 3 of the 37 Practices are nice 1 Right now, you have a good boat, fully equipped and available — hard to find. To free others and you from the sea of samsara, Day and night, fully alert and present, Study, reflect, and meditate — this is the practice of a bodhisattva. 3 Do...

Re: America is hooked on violence

Just take a look at hollywood films. They only know violent problem-solving. Somebody shouts at or kills the bad guy. But american literature is more intelligent, IMHO. There are non-violent hollywood films and books... there's also a lot of American literature that is violent as heck... Ok...

Re: Do I have to be nice all the time?

Being nice all the time is not the point. Artificially pretending positivity is also not the point.

But it matters that anger mostly hurts ourselves: (video only 1:48 min)

Re: Do I have to be nice all the time?

Being nice is an internal affair. I think it's important to know that.
It's not peoples fault, if I become angry. Anger is only my personal decision. Being friendly to myself is a good first step.

Re: How do you know when a friendship is over?

(BTW the translation 'Sons of the Buddhas' is misleading. Bodhisattva is neither male nor female. It is just a human being, no he or she.) I think "sons of Buddha" is supposed to translate "buddhaputra." This term will often appear in the vocative plural while the Buddha addresses his audience in M...

Difficult for me to discribe... means I cannot. But that practice helps me a lot to realise that I am not the only one who suffers. There is a vast crowd of people suffering from the same whatever. And I do practice for to grant relief for us all. At the same time, the small black pea of ego in my h...
