Re: THE UNIVERSE SHOULD NOT ACTUALLY EXIST, CERN SCIENTISTS DISCOVER

According to Elon Musk there's only a one in a billion chance we're in base reality at the moment. :alien: :spy: What does that mean? Reality is reality. Even if we're in a simulated reality (which I don't believe) that is still reality. Irreality desn't exist as a reality. I think it may only look...

Re: BOUND. TORTURED. KILLED.

Sorry, but there is nothing remotely unique in ISIS tactics (I wish there was), I think the thing that scares most people is that their ideology seems to have some pull, but of course most do not want to admit that their ideology has pull for a reason, and a big part of that reason is hypocrisy and...

Re: Is suicide OK?

This is admittedly where I don't agree with the Buddhist standpoint, I think suicide is allowed, and under certain circumstances an understandable choice. If the house is on fire, you get out of the house. However many people who feel suicidal may just be in need of help or medication.

Re: BOUND. TORTURED. KILLED.

When answering the question "is ISIS normal" it sorta depends what the definition of normal is. I certainly think the situation with IS is what is to be expected in Middle East. That said, most people in the Middle East loathe IS. It is not "normal" to react to what evil was done to you by inflictin...

Re: What to do about Daesh? (ISIS, ISIL...)

postscript: Think of the case in Burma (Myanmar) at the present moment. We have a fraction of the Buddhist community there calling for and enacting what looks to me like genocide against a civilian population. If the goal is to stop that program of violence, then is it adequate to convert those pro...

Re: Victims of Communism

People are bad, or at least some of them are. Perhaps everybody is to some degree. The authoritarian systems which guide life in some geographical areas and some eras reflect that. Stalinism was as bad as nazism. It was a horrific slavery of the mind, yet some people still long for that kind of madn...

Re: Meet your new Chinese Overlords - From POTUS 2016, part 2

WWIII will never happen, at least not in the form of a major war between Russia, China and the US, since everybody is aware there would only be losers (namely humanity as a whole: a full on nuclear war will wipe humanity out). Russia has way too much to lose, and certainly China as well. Putin's inn...

I don't understand how this is even an issue. For frak sake, just let people poop on whatever toilet they want. It's no big deal.

Re: Is it all America's Fault? Discuss - From POTUS part 2

In legal terms, we might say the the Netherlands, Australia :emb: and other countries are "accessories after the fact", or accomplices, to America, the ringleader. Often (but not always) it feels like we've been scared or blackmailed into co-operating. That doesn't make us blameless but does somewh...

Re: Is it all America's Fault? Discuss - From POTUS part 2

I think that a big problem is wth these "country assesssments" (how evil is the US, China, Russia etc) is that we often focus on the conflicts, the wars. War is messy stuff. And politics often has an amoral aspect to it, wherever it happens, be it the US, China, Germany, Botswana, Turkmenistan...wha...

Re: What to do about Daesh? (ISIS, ISIL...)

In the end I just do not care about wether ISIS is "Islamic" or not. They're just wrong.

Societies like what they want do not work. A society in these modern times needs to be based on pluralism, liberalism, and mutual respect in order to flourish.

Re: What to do about Daesh? (ISIS, ISIL...)

I think even though Daesh may claim some kind of religious reasoning behind their actions, it is really a simple tribal contest for power. This sort of brutality certainly doesn't need religious justification, the same shit happens in fascist states or with other cult like regimes, like Khmer Rouge ...

More like joining the "Blackwater" company of American "contractors", a.k.a. well paid mercenaries. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Academi The US army is a mercenary army. Basic active duty pay (ie with no experience) starts off at $18,500 plus extras. Granted that is pretty low. A police officer ...

Why do you equal totalitarianism with republic? Totalitarianism is all leftist people who try to force on people when and to what school children need to go, poor medical care because of public. Public things are like public toilet. Leftist have too many flaws in logic and everything, leftist peopl...

Re: POTUS 2016

it's true that there will be more and more crises, because capitalism is by definition crisis-prone. (crises of overproduction, crises of overpollution...) Fans of this system call it "creative destruction." I know it's a minority opinion around here, but my view is that these crises won't end unle...

Re: Buddha is an Ordinary Fellow

The point is that unlike poor schmucks like us, Buddha does not take rebirth in samsara [i.e. buddhas do not take afflicted birth]. Somehow, what is lost in this discussion is the existential purpose of the Dharma, ending birth in samsara, and aiding other sentient beings to do the same. Without th...

Re: Buddha is an Ordinary Fellow

What is ordinary, what is extra-ordinary? In the end they're just subjective categories we make up to create divisions. Everything is just the way it is.

I don't believe Buddha is extraordinary, but I am not sure wether he is ordinary.
