Re: deadliest mass shooting in the U.S.

I think people having the ability to sue gun manufacturers similar to what happened with Big Tobacco is all that will ever change this. AFAIK right now it is impossible, they can't be held responsible for anything, even when they do stuff like sell more deadly ammunition as "zombie bullets", which i...

Re: Kyab Rig

Matter is a an appearance of ignorance, not knowledge (rig pa). Arising from traces from a previous universe, ad infinitum? The appearances of ignorance are the mutual traces of sentient beings appearing to one another. When that ignorance is removed, one can manifest rainbow body. Ok, i'l chew on ...

So I often hear "rocks and stones don't have Buddha nature" where Kyab Rig is concerned, or something along those lines, Makes sense, kind of an obvious thing to say, but here is my question: If the Five Light arise from the basis, and all matter is ultimately the Five Lights, doesn't this mean tha...

Re: Kyab Rig

If the Five Light arise from the basis, and all matter is ultimately the Five Lights, doesn't this mean that in fact, in some sense all matter is pervaded by awareness, just simply not "from it's own side"? No, the reason for this is that such appearances are a result of traces, i.e., all appearanc...

Re: deadliest mass shooting in the U.S.

Did this ban apply to weapons like the AR 15? I recall that it did not. How would a ban on this sort of weapon even work, now that they are everywhere? Yes, it included the AR-15. However, overall it was still a pretty weak law in that it had: The Act included a "grandfather clause" that allowed fo...

Re: deadliest mass shooting in the U.S.

If you like the war on drugs your going to love the war on guns! What does that even mean? It's worth considering, the US has a history of prohibition of contraband turning into yet another war on poor people. I expect that punitive legislation would play out much like the war on drugs has here. I ...

Re: deadliest mass shooting in the U.S.

There was an assault weapons ban in the U.S. back in 1994 under Bill Clinton. It expired in 2004 and was not renewed. But it could be renewed, if the Dems can win both houses of Congress and the White House; which is very possible in 2020. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_Assault_Weapons_Ban D...

Re: deadliest mass shooting in the U.S.

I can't see a program like that working in the US at all. The only people here that would favor a program like that are likely middle class urbanites who already don't own guns. So even if the political class had the will, I don't think most of the gun owners would. IIRC Australias population is als...

More of a cat person, but I've had some great dogs. Right now we have an eight year old rat terrier we got from a shelter. She has one of the most unique dog personalities I've seem, different than what I expected for my first little dog.

Re: Awakening kundalini?

There's nothing wrong with going out and doing a yoga class, by and large the Kundalini publicly available is new agey, but as exercise very good for stuff like spinal health. It has nothing much to do with Dharma, but most of it is surface-y enough that I don't see it as interfering either. I actua...

Re: Can other religions/philosophies/practises complement Buddhadharma?

Two questions: One for no mind, can you cite where Thanisarro Bikkhu "believes in soul", or is it that simply your interpretation of something he said? That's the kind of thing it'd be nice to have a source for, a mindstream is not a "soul", generally speaking, those concepts differ substantially.....

Does old wine need to be filled into new skins to meet contemporary taste just like Padmasambhava blended the old local gods into the to-be imported Buddhism? Re: Can other religions/philosophies/practises complement Buddhadharma?

Since we're trying to quote Pali sources to argue some kind of universalism...I'll just leave this here, clearly, either the Buddha taught that "all religions are one" (or however you want to frame it), or he didn't. It appears to me that he definitely didn't. https://accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka/an...

Re: Can other religions/philosophies/practises complement Buddhadharma?

Dharma practice itself requires a lot of dedication, and at least a little study, there is only so much time. So first we need to define what is meant by "compliment". The positions of other philosophies all amount to nihilism or eternalism, both of which the Buddha explicitly rejects in so many pl...
