Re: Eliminating the pauses of the breath

About 10 months ago I decided to try and connect with some of the "local" meditating community. However I live in a rather dead area as far as Buddhism goes, and so I settled upon the occasional visit to a yoga ashram which is about an hours drive away. The founder of the ashram has a quote upon th...

Re: OCD

... but "traditional" treatment for it is not something I do anymore, nor do I want to. Same here. I tried CBT exposure therapy. Hated it, and it didn't help. The only drug that ever helped was Prozac at a high dosage ... but it made me so anxious that it kind of defeated the point! I've grown to p...

Re: OCD

Any OCDers out there? I've been obsessive my whole life, but the obsessive-compulsive thing kicked in about three decades ago. I'm pretty sure 30 years of OCD (sometimes active, sometimes dormant, but always there) has changed the structure and functionality of my little gray cells. This includes t...

Re: Do you believe in chakras (energetic centers in our body)?

So if you believe in this, then why? Is it something like praying? That means you know it won't help in the way, you think it helps, but it helps in the way of mind something like 'placebo effect'. Let's get this out of the way before we go further: no one needs to justify their practice, this is a...

Re: Psychoanalysis

Why exactly is talk therapy useless? It's not helpful for everyone, but there are many people who benefit from it. Such as people who experience a trauma which they didn't recover from, where their experiences were denied and negated by others, especially family members. It happens all the time. I ...

Re: Psychoanalysis

During his life the founder of AA, Bill W., proudly wrote about the 12 Steps being incorporated into some form of Buddhism in Japan. He did not say which kind of Buddhism however. In any case apparently he did not see the 12 Steps as being Christian specific. Yes, there's a lot of wisdom in the Big...

Re: Generosity

I have a question to ask here. When a homeless drug addict appraches you at a red light stop, should you give him money or not. I would give to homeless people who dont look like addict. But for some one is either young and strong or who looks like addict, I won't. For the reason I feel I am either...

Re: Psychoanalysis

Following that absolutist logic, things like the 12 steps are also just attempts to fix our samsara, and would fit under the broad category of stuff you are criticizing, but I know you think highly of those. I see the 12 Steps as an incomplete path. There’s no final liberation from “self” per se. B...

Re: Democrats are compulsive self mutilators

You're kind of dodging the question... That's because the question is premised on something you believe in to one degree or another that I probably don't - some sort of unique quality in a president that would change things for the better. My view of politics doesn't revolve around elites l...

Re: millions die of drug addiction

Really dig that video, i hope the evidence from places like Portugal have an influence in the US. On who is an addict: There is no "addict profile", there are some commonalities, but mostly people are seeing what they want to see when they claim there is a "type", people from all walks of life have ...

Re: Psychoanalysis

You’ve got to have your head screwed on somewhat straight in order to practice Dharma. If you’re too screwed up you’ll only make things worse. Having said that, my understanding is that your psyche is your unawareness and your limitations—your samsara. It is what you become liberated from . If so t...

Worth watching on Wayfarer's point:

I agree on Freud's influence on Western culture, you can't not agree after seeing this film...I just don't think it's a particularly positive one, and I hope we are digging our way out from those ideas.

Along those lines, there's considerable evidence (well, granted, according to a particular school of thought and way of viewing evidence) that the particular qualities exhibited by the therapist are a bigger deal than the modality practiced. None of it would be a surprise to Dharma people... "accur...

Re: Psychoanalysis

Psychoanalysis is not taken very seriously any more That's like saying the bible is not taken very seriously any more, because all it contains are fairy tales. Well, quite the opposite, many people take the bible very, very seriously. Any many, many Western therapists are so familiar with so many f...

Re: Democrats are compulsive self mutilators

I generally find, though, that those in the US tend to have a very high estimation of those strengths and limited appreciation of life in other countries. Point taken. There are many possibilities from which one can take their lead. My point was really about Americans having some confidence in doin...

Re: Democrats are compulsive self mutilators

As much as I loathe Trump, it's not as if most professional politicians do a "good" job. They usually do a job that helps them maintain power, and the status quo. Unless you are one of those people that somehow remembers the Obama, Bush or Clinton eras as these idyllic times, there's not much reaso...
