Re: Democrats are compulsive self mutilators

The litmus test for me would be whether they are sincerely civic minded. At least someone like that, they're on the level and understand that criticism is part of the give and take system. At least someone like that you know its possible to find areas of flexibility while we also want them to stand...

Re: Democrats are compulsive self mutilators

I think we fundamentally agree here - look above, by no means do I think Amazon shouldn't be criticized. As you allude, Amazon is basically E-Walmart. Walmart is doing the same thing to their ground level workforce as Amazon - paying them as little as possible and effectively getting social safety ...

Re: Democrats are compulsive self mutilators

As I pointed out above, real estate is a tough issue. Its slow to respond to market forces, and tends to be exacerbated by the kinds of forces Yglesias pointed out about Austin - ie. NIMBY. Its always a fight to develop affordable housing. But, as much as I believe that distribution of wealth needs...

Re: Dzogchen Community of Chogyal Namkhai Norbu

Playing off that last sentiment, I just want to express appreciation for all the vajra siblings on this thread. Rinpoche changed my life, and despite living near Seattle there’s no Ling remotely near me, so it feels good to be in touch in some way with other practitioners for help and support. Ofte...

SMH. Have a day.
Yeah, Like I said, you don't live around or work with the results of Amazon-ification. My guess is you'd feel a little less enthused if you did.

You "have a day" too, though I'm not sure why that was necessary.

Re: Democrats are compulsive self mutilators

Well, then, I guess all I can say is, noted. My general view of Bezos is not without reservations. I have deep reservations about many things. But, its OK. I'll be the straw man for corporatism. Straw man? You just said you'd vote for the guy lol.....If you don't want to hold the wealth-hoarders ac...

Re: Democrats are compulsive self mutilators

Dude, Amazon is partially responsible for a lot of the homelessness in my town, and yet Bezos refused to pay for the damage he's done, again, screw that guy. I want to see him and his ilk with less power, not more. Because they drive up the real estate costs? Real estate is slow to adapt to conditi...

Re: Democrats are compulsive self mutilators

I'd also vote for Jeff Bezos. The guy is a genius. His recent comments about Silicon Valley and DoD hit the right note. Yuck, no. Amazon is already defacto monopoly trying to take over aspects of government. Big Tech in general wields a level of power and influence that is pretty much unprecedented...

Re: This Western Dharma experiment has been unsuccessful

It seems to me that the "mindfulness" movement is really about becoming more effective workers and not particularly concerned with teaching the "metaphysical" stuff. That is exactly what it is. It repurposes those techniques to allow people to gratify their egos and enjoy samsara. But: it’s still b...

Re: Latest report on Shambala abuse just released.

You think being at mass events will teach you what you need to know? Do they live here? Did they even learn proper English? I can see this is getting people very defensive. That is good. This glide path is very obvious and should be talked about. It depends on the person, some can certainly progres...

Re: anti-"Hinayana" bias in Zen (and Mahayana in general)

Agree with most of the above, although not inclined to dismiss 'hinayana' as inferior out of hand. As one example Ajahn Chah says plenty of stuff that is reminiscent of a Mahayana message, so making use of those categories in the modern world should be functional, and based on what is taught, not s...

Re: Dzogchen Community of Chogyal Namkhai Norbu

I read that message when I got it as not publicly sharing pictures, etc., almost a message directed on limiting one's use of social media to memorialize. I don't do that anyway, but I confess i found the message puzzling. Anyway, it's safe to say this is a tough time for Rinpoche's students, let's t...

Re: anti-"Hinayana" bias in Zen (and Mahayana in general)

The bias against the path of individual liberation is literally built into Mahayana, it's not just a bias either, but a doctrinal position. A Zen-relevant example would be the part of the Lankavatara dealing with Arhats, which covers what Astus talks about, iirc...the error in the path of Nirvana as...

lifestyle choices That's a fraught phrase... I'd restate something like, "bad idea to take refuge in any conditioned identity ." Uh, better go with something like, "bad idea to take refuge in any conditioned identity , with the exception of Buddhist ." No, that's a bad idea too, even if people do i...

Re: Is it an oxymoron for a Nichiren Buddhist to be Republican?

It is counterproductive for any Buddhist to cherish X identity over their desire to save all beings. But others' delusions are not our concern until we're buddhas. Until then, my own constant stream of BS is plenty to manage. Yep, I agree with this. It's one thing to hold whatever political views y...
