After the man left, Rabjam Rinpoche recalled that the great yogi Shabkar Tsodruk Rangdrol (1781-1851) had said about such cases: “There are people who pretend they can chew stones, but can’t chew butter.”

 That's a keeper.

Re: Pure Land practice and Vajrayana (HYT)

Yep, No Abode is as far as I know the only collection. It's amazing though and I'd recommend it to any Dharma practitioner, Pureland or no.

Re: Pure Land practice and Vajrayana (HYT)

There are Chenrezig/Amitabha sadahana out there that are mostly devotional in tone. It seems like coming from the Pureland perspective, Kriya Tantra practices would be a good bet. Whether or not these qualify as "other power" is debatable, but they definitely feel like other power in practice. This ...

Re: Thoughts on Dzogchen without buddhism?

Someone kindly pointed me to the following text, explaining the different vehicles viewed from a Dzogchen perspective: The Art of Nakedness: Bearing it all for the single nature of mind, a look at Buddhist salvation (written by Omega Point). Is this a legit presentation? I admit I find it a weirdly...

Re: Help me with a difficult family conversation.

Thanks Norwegian, I think we are very much on the same page here. I'm going to go ahead and have the conversation, and emphasize doing things other than fishing.

Re: TRUCK FUMP

As far as I know, this practice did not begin with Trump, his administration has greatly accelerated it with "Zero tolerance", but unfortunately it is not new. The administration -wanted- it to be a deterrent, they as much as admitted it, repugnant as that is... so far it is not working apparently....

Re: TRUCK FUMP

Because Trump is a scociopathic moron, he will be enjoying the publicity about the imprisoned chidren, and probably sees it as a sign his policies are working. His PR machine has clearly decided to use the wife as the caring face of the administration - poor woman, it is like watching a scared pris...

Re: Help me with a difficult family conversation.

Has anyone ever had to have this conversation? Other way around! I used to take my boys fishing when they were little, but then for exactly the same reason I had to abandon fishing when they got to about high-school age, much to their annoyance. We had many vexed conversations, one of which was, yo...

Re: Help me with a difficult family conversation.

We've raised our kids to not kill things, we put bugs outside rather than killing them etc. Sometimes we let them be. We aren't romantic about it, but the expectation is there. If there's a wasp's nest or something, this is different and sometimes one must do what one must. This is part of the reas...

Re: Help me with a difficult family conversation.

I pretty much agree with Kevin. These situations can be, as you know, difficult in life because we dont want to push our beliefs on others, or make them feel limited by our perpective. I think what will be interesting is how your children react. My dad took me fishing once when i was around 10 or 1...

Help me with a difficult family conversation.

So, I grew up fishing with my Dad, trips at least once a month, much more during the summer etc. Point is, fishing was a part of how I grew up. Since getting serious with Dharma a number of years ago, I have decided I don't want to fish again, and decided that I don't want to condition my kids into ...

Re: Meditate and grow your ego

Isn't that a bit contradictory? It is if you have a poor understanding of Buddhadharma, and think in terms of either "I have an ego" or "I don't have ego", a position which the Buddha argues against all over the various vehicles. It is a pretty rookie approach to Buddhism to believe that the answer...

Re: Thoughts on Dzogchen without buddhism?

Thanks for the fine answer. I think my core dissonance vis a vis buddhism as I understand it is this: accepting the nature of mind and emptiness, it seems that everything conditioned is perpetually justified just as it is. Everything, from the horrors, to the wonders, from the sorrows to the ecstas...

Re: Meditate and grow your ego

The article is written seemingly by someone with little to no idea of the subject matter. As an example, the author cannot understand how one could both have an improved relative self image, and yet have insight into the illusory nature of that relative self. In fact, Buddhist practice is supposed t...

Re: TRUCK FUMP

Why does it always seem to be an either-or scenario? Either the hopeless Dems who lost the election through rigging the primaries and offering a very flawed candidate or the Russian meddling did it? It is almost certainly both. I don't get why you argue so vehemently against the latter, JD, have yo...

Re: original as misnomer

I often come across references to Original Mind, Nature, etc.in discussions of Buddhism (especially Zen). However, i don't see a lot of intellectual rigor in these discussions; if we break things down, Original is defined as 'inherent' or sometimes indicates a temporal reference, i.e. like a child....
