Re: Tibetan Buddhism only loosely connected with Buddha's teachings?

I saw on a Yahoo Answers page someone mentioning that Tibetan Buddhism has been dubbed "lamaism" because it is only loosely connected with Buddha's teachings. Is this true? I've been reading books by the Dalai Lama and he definitely the Four Noble Truths which are the foundation of Buddhism. I've a...

Wish I could read it. It sucks being poor.
No idea where you are but.. .
Do you have a library that can do inter library loans or a similar program? I read probably half my Dharma books this way, and they have gotten everything I have ever asked for, books on tantra, Dzogchen etc..

Re: Diets are dumb

For the record, I did not advance a theory when I started this topic. I wanted to provoke a discussion by leading with my opinion, which remains my opinion: diets are dumb. A healthy relationship to food isn't dumb at all. Food, in and of itself, is excellent stuff and I'm glad I have plenty of it....

Re: Dont follow a lineage (etc.), follow a teacher

There's relative mind, then there's the ultimate nature of relative mind. Anyway, I think one can come at it from teacher or lineage, or even simply from the basic approach, felt on a visceral level...removed from credential or lineage. Personally for me the biggest thing was questioning and ultimat...

Re: What happened to Buddhanet.net

Buddhianet is working fine as far as I can see. It has nothing whatever to do with NKT. It was started and is run by a Australian Theravadin monk, Ven. Pannyavaro, from a retreat centre in Northern NSW. Buddhanet was one of the very first public websites, about any subject at all, to go live, in ar...

Anyone know what happened to buddhanet.net?
Something happened?

I wouldn't know, as I don't visit sites that promote NKT and their kind.
It's an NKT thing? I thought it was run by Theravadins.

Crystal and the Way of Light, and Dzogchen: The Self Perfected State.

If you actually takes transmission, lots of other stuff to read, the Guru Yoga book is indispensable.

Re: Question about transmission and pointing-out instructions

PS, if it helps.. I consider ChNN my root teacher, despite the fact i've never met him, and might not ever. I have had lots of other (mostly in person) teachings and teachers that I also consider quite precious, but no one else has had the same impact, or resolved doubts the way he has. From my poin...

Re: Question about transmission and pointing-out instructions

Rick, a number of teachers give transmission and empowerment remotely, I don't think it's a big question for that many people on here, especially because many here are students of ChNN, Garchen Rinpoche, and others who give online transmissions. A more controversial proposition is whether there is t...

Re: The DJKR Topic

There are a number of issues with leftist liberalism/progressivism that IMO are incompatible with Dharma such as placing a priority on a woman's "right to choose" over the lives of human foetuses, "identity politics" which reify all these temporary, impermanent concepts, etc. The point is that we d...

I always confuse myself, can someone confirm, the time should be 4am PST...right? The Live Webcast page tells you the local time for the event whenever you go to it, low down on the right, so you can go to it now and use that as the starting point to work out your time difference. Ah cool, had no i...

Re: The DJKR Topic

This article (translation of an Austrian text) also brings up the case of a Belgian teacher accused of similar shenanigans. It took years before Ben was even able to kill a mosquito. Not killing is good. They should have used a different example. That one actually sounds like the beginning of a par...

Re: The DJKR Topic

...it's unusual to see people on the left critique the left, it's been so rare for a while now. Huh? One of the main problems of the left is that they spend endless time critiquing each other for not being sufficiently leftist. This is why you hear people complain about the "purity police." Most of...

Re: The DJKR Topic

DJKR's quasi-legal, pathetic attempt at a joke is seen by many as belittling women's experiences of abuse at the hands of Sogyal. As far as i got with it, isn't his rationale for a legal doc in order to avoid disagreements later on between partners? It's timing can't be a total coincidence. You can...
