Re: deadliest mass shooting in the U.S.

Blind? I actually live here and grew up here, in various parts of the country, and know well what it is like to live in different areas, i've even spent time in "Trump county" type places and places saturated with guns - and seen the attendant problems. You do not, and are relying on media reports ...

Re: deadliest mass shooting in the U.S.

Your view is a little like saying that your body only has a few Stage 4 cancer cells and elsewhere the other mutating cells are only at Stage 1, so there's no cause for concern except for the minority of Stage 4 cells. It won't spread if I ignore it? No, it isn't like that, what it's like is operat...

Re: deadliest mass shooting in the U.S.

Add that to the first point, and you potentially have at least one armed crazy person in each large school. So, I think the kids who believe it is just a matter of time before their school experiences gun violence are right to do so. As it is a very small minority of schools which experience shooti...

Re: QUERY: Naljorpa--Information About?

Thanks very much for the replies so far. I am really surprised at how little written information there seems to be on this subject. You can just read Hagiography/stories about nearly any famous Tibetan Yogi...you could start with the MIlarepa books put out by Shambhala I suppose. Naljorpa (as dzogc...

Re: deadliest mass shooting in the U.S.

Going back to my earlier point. If you were about to be sent on active service in the US military would you feel nervous about the risk of being shot ? Yet, some are questioning whether it is right for schoolkids to feel nervous about the same risk, when more of them have been killed. Many of those...

Re: deadliest mass shooting in the U.S.

And no the statistics do not show they are "now happening once per week", that is a bit of an extrapolation. Which one is an extrapolation? https://www.cnn.com/2018/03/02/us/school-shootings-2018-list-trnd/index.html May 18: Santa Fe, Texas At least eight people -- and as many as 10 -- were killed ...

Re: deadliest mass shooting in the U.S.

Even with your stats, these are relatively uncommon events - thats part of what makes them newsworthy. You're right, they are relatively uncommon events... in Australia, for example, where they had an extremely successful firearm ban and buyback, and where gun deaths dropped dramatically. In the US...

Re: deadliest mass shooting in the U.S.

I get that people are scared, but the idea that "no kid is safe anywhere" is just fear mongering. Hi Johnny. To be fair, I said "no kid feels safe at school". Can you really blame them? Being that there is on average one school shooting per week in the US? I will provide some stats when I get home....

Re: deadliest mass shooting in the U.S.

Much like terrorism, these events make people feel they are in much more danger than they likely are. I get that people are scared, but the idea that "no kid is safe anywhere" is just fear mongering. We still live in an incredibly safe time, and by and large kids growing up today in the US are quite...

This conversation is uncannily similar to debates I've over the relative merits of different superheros.

How long would it take a Dzogchen practitioner to make a Pure Land better than Buddha Amitabha's?

Thanks.

Finally, a truly practice-related question.

Re: Interconnected - HH Ogyen Trinley Droje

I recently read an excerpt of the book in the title of this thread here: https://www.wisdompubs.org/blog/201701/17th-karmapa-authentic-freedom Here is the opening: Freedom is a powerful idea. But I am not sure we are always very clear what we have in mind when we speak of it. Does freedom mean doin...

Re: Trump's Movement to Unilateralism

Makes sense. So maybe one can see The Donald as a kind of necessary, if painful, course correction? A bit of: See what happens when we let social/cultural/financial inequity go (relatively) unchecked! I don't know, I try not to assign emotional values to events like these. I think that his presiden...

Trump will be able to manipulate class to his advantage until it becomes a central part of the political conversation on the left again. Makes sense. Re: Trump's Movement to Unilateralism

End rant. End rant on my end. ! ;-) That's what discourse is like these days in this strange collective we call America: trading rants. I had this idea to start a meetup group in my neck of the woods in which Pro- and Anti-Trumpians would come together and discuss, hang out, get to know each other....

Re: Trump's Movement to Unilateralism

... Yet, what is even more baffling and sad are the people that continue to support him. Sadly, this is not too mysterious. For the Republican party, who (temporarily) control house, senate and presidency, this is a chance to ram through as many federal judicial appointments as possible. Hard to ov...

Re: Trump's Movement to Unilateralism

The American empire has been in decline for a while... Trump is a symptom, not a sudden cause. Trumps fans are indeed misinformed, IMO so are 90% of self described liberals who live their own bubble these days, one which involves distinctly ignoring some of the reasons for Trump's success, and simpl...

Re: Trump's Movement to Unilateralism

Begin rant ... Trump is more than just a boob and cartoon villain ... he's an enabler of violence, gross to subtle: racism, fear-mongering, truth-trashing, press-quashing, anti-science, anti-cooperation, anti-kindness/compassion, anti-honor. He makes his supporters (and even, egads, some of his arc...
