Re: Difficulty in discussing Mahayana across traditions

Backstory: One of the issues I noticed with the long, long, long vegetarian discussions we've had at DW has to do with what counts as authoritative across Mahayana traditions. When practitioners discuss various topics with each other, certain assumptions about What Matters and What Is Of Value are ...

Re: Blue "ripple"

I wasn't aware of this gerrymander but it doesn't surprise me in retrospect because we have a similar arrangement - a federal system in which each state gets equal representation in the upper house. I suspect that the origins are the same: that states, independent when the federation was formed, wo...

Re: Blue "ripple"

How 'bout changing the constitution so that sparsely populated rural states don't hold the rest of the country captive? Wyoming only has 500,000+ people, while California has 37 million (I think that's the number). In other words, the population of California is 16+ times that of Wyoming. Yet both ...

Re: I need some help for an internet research

Hi, Ayu, In English it's usually spelled "Malware" and a search for that term should get you plenty of results. All I can say as a user is that I have rarely had problems with getting stuff from anyone I know but I do routinely get suspicious emails - phishing scams, Nigerian gold, etc - from strang...

Re: Does anyone barefoot jog or hike?

I go barefoot around my home and garden for about 9 months of the year - tropical climate. And I will hike barefoot where it's safe and comfortable to do so. I like the direct contact with the ground, the flexibility and stability of my feet responding to the surface I'm walking on, but I'm ...

Re: Practicing and Finding a Teacher when you live in the middle of nowhere

... The problem is that ... any Buddhist Sangha of any tradition is at least 30 minutes or 80 miles, and the nearest Tendai sangha is a five-hour drive from me. ... it's not financially possible for me to attend regularly or even really make the trip more than once a year ... I was wondering what o...

Re: Rate this news source

None of the major reference sites (Wikipedia, Sourcewatch, etc) seem to talk about it, which suggests it's not highly regarded. https://mediabiasfactcheck.com/foreign-policy-journal/ says leftish and unreliable - although I have to say I don't know that site well enough to know how reliable it is. Re: Best winter home for retired Buddhists?

A lot of people find it difficult adjusting to the sub-tropical climate. I am not sure how much experience you have in that regard. I would recommend spending a while there before making any permanent moves. The most expensive part is the air ticket. You can get cheap accomodations that are liveabl...

Re: Best winter home for retired Buddhists?

I'm lucky enough to live in the tropics in a first-world country  so my perspective is a bit different. For me, the big differences in liveability are about noise, crowding, public health, roads, political freedom, etc. In those terms, Chiang Mai is pleasanter than Bangkok, but Thailand...

Re: Apsaras

They are as much Hindu as Buddhist - maybe even more Hindu - and have various minor roles in both traditions ... mainly decorative, IMO, and often explicitly sexual.

1. If you are really suicidal, get professional help, ASAP. 2. You're in high school and you're going through the super achiever meat grinder. Seems its common in your generation. You're going to have to figure out what you want to be when you grow up. Don't know? You're normal. I would suggest tal...

Hello friends, Moving from algaesatva ah to humans... ...question, are humans (humanity) always going to exist? If not, then what happens to the human realm of samsara? Another major Dharma edit or there will be no one to edit it? I think that the humans are not forever. And the earth, will be gone...

I remember that book and remember finding it fun. Not sure how much it has to do with Buddhism.
