Drawdown by Paul Hawken

Here's an interview with the author of a new book on combatting climate change. https://www.vox.com/energy-and-environment/2017/5/10/15589038/top-100-solutions-climate-change-ranked The bit that made me want to post it on DW is this: David Roberts: If you had to guess, what’s the biggest potential c...

Re: Socialism & Communism

I don't care if a cat is black or brown, as long as it catches mice. Unfortunately, neither capitalism nor socialism has proven to be worth a damn in that respect. Socialism has not been tried, really. Communism began with Socialist rhetoric but very quickly morphed into what Le Guin aptly called t...

Re: Veganism is an Eating Disorder

A bit off topic here, but it's important to add that diet is not the only method to help control blood sugar and weight loss. Exercise is equally important; both are needed to obtain optimum results. Walking is the easiest and least expensive way to begin - no special equipment needed (except shoes...

The private health insurance industry's profit model is based on patients getting sick as least often as possible, so that the insurer can avoid having to make payouts. What form of diet does Kaiser Permanente, America's largest health insurer, recommend for long-term health? Kaiser Permanente enco...

I'm not even vegetarian but I enjoy some of their recipes a lot ... Most omnivores do enjoy good vegan and vegetarian food occasionally, IMO - they often don't care whether it's meat-free or not and never care about whether its vegan or vegetarian. Most of them get a bit twitchy if you ask them to ...

Re: The Happy, Healthy Vegan Youtube Channel

Avoidance of onions and garlic is quite widespread in India, too - I believe they are prohibited for Jains and avoided in (some?) Southern Indian cuisines. I can't remember the details, though, and haven't got time to look it up.

Re: When the Earth is a Cinder

I'm not sure about space sunscreens. For a sufficiently large screen they need approximately 16 million, 1 meter diameter disks. Imo the mining required for the materials and the fact that NASA predict it'll need hundreds of rockets, the environmental damage far outweighs the cooling effect (ignori...

Re: Veganism is an Eating Disorder

It occurs to me that vegan bears a stigma, that nullifies unwanted awareness of shame or disgrace. The term carnism- another weaponised term- carries a counter mark of disgrace. That aside, I do not think I am alone in saying that many people would rather reduce their own health, if that means a ne...

Re: When the Earth is a Cinder

Kim, I agree with you that there is hope in the market forces tending toward renewables. What I'm afraid of, however, is that those same market forces favor deregulation and firms willing to take advantage of deregulation, consequences to the environment be damned, as long as it means profits in th...

Re: Veganism is an Eating Disorder

I'll go one further and say most people who obsess long term over diet details (rather than just planning, etc.) are often in one way or another, on the road to an eating disorder. Goes for Paleo as much as for Vegans. Tell ya what, if you find Vegans uniquely annoying go spend some time with a Cro...

Absolutely. Before modern times, even westerners ate everything they could find and still went hungry a lot of the time.

Re: Diets are dumb

Well, yeah, "diet" in the sense of short term reduction of calories in order to loose weight , diets are pretty dumb. Every child knows that in most cases that leads to yoyo-effect. But in the sense of long term watching out, what you eat and see that it's not too much crap I think it mak...

Re: Akiane, artistic genius

My use of 'genius' is the older meaning: Among the ancients, a good or evil spirit or demon supposed to preside over a man's destiny in life, that is, to direct his birth and actions and be his guard and guide; a tutelary deity; the ruling and protecting power of men. https://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/c...
