Re: Human, you are not necessary.

Your thread title is basically a line from an episode of "Doctor Who" - back when David Tennant was The Doctor, IIRC - but the future is obviously closer than we thought. Don't worry, though. Civilisation as we know it is going to implode any day soon, so we won't have a problem. :coffee: Kim

Re: Fukushima and Nuclear Energy

The primary problem has shifted in the last ten years from the political to the economic. At this point, renewables are so much cheaper (and getting even cheaper, very quickly), and so much quicker to take from bare dirt to finished facility, that nuclear can't compete. Coal can't compete, either -...

P.S. This - https://www.cnbc.com/2018/12/06/california-clears-final-hurdle-for-state-solar-mandate-for-new-homes.html institutionalises decentralisation. :woohoo: California clears final hurdle for state's landmark solar panel mandate for new homes A requirement for new homes built in California sta...

Re: Fukushima and Nuclear Energy

A member on DWE used this thread - https://dharmawheel.org/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=103#p1491 - to push nuclear power as a key part of decarbonisation, quoting Hansen and Shellenberger in support. I argued against him, but you may find the discussion worth a look.

Re: If the bad times are coming, what to do?

I was keeping track of the Fukushima story on DWT until all the non-dhammic threads were closed and DWE started. Old topics are still visible, though, and here's my last post, March 2018: https://dhammawheel.com/viewtopic.php?f ... 45#p460732

Re: If the bad times are coming, what to do?

I'm with the authors of Drawdown on this one - it's likely to be a part of the solution but one with regrets, unlike renewables or, in fact, nearly all of the other parts of the solution. I do not think it solves much, to be honest. It ties in neatly to, and therefore solidifies and perpetrates, th...

Re: If the bad times are coming, what to do?

Try to dispel the myths surrounding nuclear energy that persist among the population. It is a big [and a necessary] step We disagree here, and greatly so. SumOfUs Petition: https://actions.sumofus.org/a/google-cancel-project-dragonfly-1/ Right now at least a million people are being detained in mass internment camps by the Chinese authorities simply because they’re Muslim. Definitely. How would you like hearing on the streets about the "God News" of the Pali Kanon? Let's stop suffering right now, cheer up, because Buddha loves you ..!!.. And what about "Testimonies of the Buddha" knocking on your door? Buddha's Witnesses, promising the Kingdom of Buddha here on earth...

Yes but circumstances change and percepts aren't commandments like you said in another thread. I imagine the negative karma produced from killing in self-defense is much less severe than straight up murder. ...and much more severe than the negative karma of allowing your attacker to do as s/he wish...

Re: Difficulty in discussing Mahayana across traditions

Backstory: One of the issues I noticed with the long, long, long vegetarian discussions we've had at DW has to do with what counts as authoritative across Mahayana traditions. When practitioners discuss various topics with each other, certain assumptions about What Matters and What Is Of Value are ...

Re: Blue "ripple"

I wasn't aware of this gerrymander but it doesn't surprise me in retrospect because we have a similar arrangement - a federal system in which each state gets equal representation in the upper house. I suspect that the origins are the same: that states, independent when the federation was formed, wo...

Re: Blue "ripple"

How 'bout changing the constitution so that sparsely populated rural states don't hold the rest of the country captive? Wyoming only has 500,000+ people, while California has 37 million (I think that's the number). In other words, the population of California is 16+ times that of Wyoming. Yet both ...
