Re: Guru Yoga & Lamanism: Speculations on Shingon and Nichiren Schools

Just out of idle curiosity, I searched for, "The guru is engaged as yidam, as a nirmanakaya manifestation of a Buddha. The process of guru yoga might entail visualization of an entire lineage of masters (refuge tree) as an invocation of the lineage," i.e. the middle of that quote. Results? Screen Sh...

This one is quite long so you have to visit the page - NEW YORK—In a groundbreaking new study published Friday in The Journal Of East Asian Studies, a team of leading historians has proved that meditation originally spread from ancient China because a single, highly annoying monk went around telling...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2018_FIFA_World_Cup Any other World Cup fans here? I'm not a big fan of soccer/football, but I do watch the World Cup since it's only once every 4 years. Since almost every country competes, they start the qualifying matches to see who's in very shortly after the previ...

Did you realise you have woken a thread that has been peacefully sleeping for more than four years?
The Spirit hasn't posted here for more than three years, and there have been several other Shinto-Buddhism threads in the meantime.

Re: Advice for scraping a website.

1. Copy and paste the plain text. Right click and save images. 2. A more permanent, better copy would be to get the html code. That can be done by right-clicking a page and then hit View Page Source, then copy and paste that code. And then you could use that code to restart the website, if you choo...

Re: Do we need to go through certain ritual to become an Upasaka (Laity)?

Informally, taking refuge in the Triple Gem makes you a Buddhist. However, most schools have formal ceremonies which are the equivalent of Christian baptism in that they make your commitment public - see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Upāsaka_and_Upāsikā#Initiation_ceremonies for basic descriptions. ...

Re: deadliest mass shooting in the U.S.

I haven't read The Atlantic for a long while but I used to think it was reliable and thoughtful, so I don't know what to think about this article or this quote, since I find it doubtful, at least comparing it to what I thought I knew about ISIS: The idea that the Islamic State simply scans the news...

Re: Server migration Sept 22

FWIW, I've had no connection problems. Then again, since before the changeover I've only connected via this one computer. Avatars are still on the "wrong" side here but flipped back to the "right" (i.e. left) side on DWT a while ago. Thanks for all the hard work that (I'm sure) is going on behind th...

Re: deadliest mass shooting in the U.S.

Our national news service has this to say: A 64-year-old man armed with more than 10 rifles rained down gunfire on a Las Vegas country music festival on Sunday, slaughtering at least 58 people in the largest mass shooting in US history before killing himself. Nevada retiree Stephen Paddock has been ...

We should be doing something usefully compassionate as well as talking. It might be of interest to those who didn't participat...

Never can one have enough understanding of bodhicitta, so I am bumping this seven-year old thread up in hopes the Venerable will add to it. Ven Huifeng has dropped in only once or twice a year for the last couple of years, and only to announce courses at Fo Guang Shan University. Like you, I value ...

Eyewitness account of recent Tibetan sky burial

Tibetan Sky Burials: Stumbling upon the secret ritual of feeding the dead to vulture 'angels' Tibetan Sky Burials is a traditional custom in Tibetan Buddhism to farewell their dead, and these days outsiders are mostly forbidden from witnessing them. I had heard of Tibetan Sky Burials with a mixture...

... I don't think it only happens in the USA. Here in Oz we're seeing at least four times as much coverage of the US flooding as of the Asian flooding, and it's really hard to see any good reason for that. Our connections to the US are strong but mainly cultural, while our connections to the Indian...
