It'd be better to make your spiritual quest and your family the same thing. Compassion is naturally felt for one's family due to nature, that's a good starting point for Compassion that transcends one's family, preferences etc. If we can't find the "spiritual" in the mundane aspects of life, it see...

It's great that you are questioning. I think the answer lies in whether your interpretation of the dharma is literal of figurative - or a combination. :heart: My interpretation tends to lean towards the figurative side.
