Re: Are there such phrases in the canon?

The path is the truth (the fourth), and the truth cannot be practiced: it can only be comprehended/achieved. Four Noble Truths - are the Aryan truths, i.e. a given for the Aryans. Beginners (we all) cannot “practice” them, for we are not Arias. And there is no other Aryan Path for beginners. Theref...

Re: Lineage

I thought Shingon was largely a tantric lay lineage? Do you mean teach to UNINITIATED laypeople openly? As you may already be aware, Japanese Buddhism has their own ordination system. Within that system you are either ordained or a lay person. Outside that system ie from the view point of all other...

Re: Tendai nenbutsu for lay practitioners

Thank you so much for your reply, Rev. Seishin! It makes much more sense now! Since there is a distinction between the different faculties of practitioners I can imagine that the nine grades of birth in the Pure Land are also important in Tendai Pure Land teachings. Yes totally. There is a text by ...

Re: Tendai nenbutsu for lay practitioners

There are numerous things at play here which I feel need to be addressed; Firstly, I feel it is best to look at how the nembutsu is viewed from the Chinese Tiantai perspective, vs the Japanese Tendai perspective. Secondly, I feel it is important to realise that within BOTH Tiantai and Tendai, differ...

I have had two teachers. As my second teacher was my first teachers' teacher, the teaching has mostly been the same, but with more depth and further explanation... if that makes sense...

Re: Did Chi-i or tendai tradition recite NMHRK or lotus sutra title?

For instance: From Zhiyi's Confessional Samadhi: https://web.archive.org/web/20050317183048/http://www.tientai.net:80/lit/hksmsg/HKSMSGtextD4.htm I think though, if one were listening to these chants in Tendai temples, one would completely miss this sentence as it is chanted thus; 一心敬禮大乘妙法蓮華經十方一切尊經...

Re: does tendai school accepts the amala-consciousness concept

The Tendai school postulates 9 Consciousnesses, with the Amala conscious being the 9th. It is pure, and un-tainted by negative karma. Although I've seen it equated with Buddha-nature, I need to research the concept a lot more before making any definitive statements as a Tendai Buddhist.

Re: Introduction to Tendai - questions and resources

1. What does a basic Tendai Buddhist practice look like? > The answer will differ depending on numerous things; is the practitioner ordained or a lay person? Who is their teacher? What lineage to they belong to? What temple do they belong to? etc etc. Generally speaking, a lay person may practice th...

Re: NMHRK-5 principles of name, essence, quality, function, and teaching

The 5 principles are from Zhiyi, Tientai: Common to the masters of his time, Zhiyi claimed that the essence of the Lotus Sutra can be found within its title; “Saddharma Puṇḍarīka Sūtra”, in English “Sūtra on the White Lotus of the Sublime Dharma”, in Chinese 妙法蓮華經 Miàofǎ Liánhuá jīng, and in Japanes...
