Re: Many Practices in Tendai, but for Whom?

It is true, Tendai Shu (like Shingon Shu) is notoriously difficult to get in to in a meaningful way in Japan for foreigners, and to an extent the Japanese themselves, unless you have family ties to a Tendai lineage. There are many practices that are "closed doors" to lay people, and even many which ...

Re: Tiantai Meditation

I have little experience with zen Buddhism/meditation so I may be way off base. My experience with zen meditation is that it was either meditation on the breath, meditation on koan, or 'just sit'. What is meant by 'just sit' (I apologise for not doing it justice) is that one sits with whatever arise...

Re: Psoriasis

Silly me, I should have said that I don't have psoriasis but a condition related to psoriasis that affects my face and chest. The treatment is practically identical. I find I can't use soaps, even the "clinically proven" special ones. Instead, bathe in just water. For really bad episodes bathe in oa...

Re: Karma in Mahāyāna

I kept meaning to follow up on this. I'm asking about something fairly specific, but I couldn't remember details off-hand when I posted this topic. Upon further investigation, I'm wondering about something called niyamas , apparently discussed in the Moliyasivaka Sutta, of which there are five type...

Re: Karma in Mahāyāna

It poses more questions; is karma only cause and effect? Is all cause and effect karma (dependant origination for example)? Do insentient phenomena have karma?

Re: Psoriasis

I find I can't use soaps, even the "clinically proven" special ones. Instead, bathe in just water. For really bad episodes bathe in oats. I very gently exfoliate every day and then apply Aveeno cream. It seems to work really well for me, even though the traditional advice is to not exfoliate. A chan...

Re: Shingon Initiation - Japan

I may be wrong, but I believe the public kanjo initiations do not come with any teachings. If you're looking for instruction in practice it will be difficult to get this in Japan.

Re: Tendai fire ceremony

Due to the esoteric nature of the goma you won't find an in-depth explanation for every element in the public domain. That book you have by Saso is, as far as I'm aware, the only public publication of the Tendai goma. He also has a set of videos that accompanies the book you'll find on his webpage. ...

Re: Single practice schools

I believe the phrase "single practice" may have indeed originated in Tendai (or rather Tientai I should say) however I can't see why it would be derogatory, as Tendai itself has ichigyo zanmai practice. And, although each of the Kamakura schools have a wide variety of practices, they all claim that ...

Re: Meditation in Tendai

With regards to the word 'Dai', there are many words in Japanese that sound the same, but are actually completely different words. Just like in English we have 'where' and 'wear'. DGA has given you the Kanji for Tendai '天台'. The first character (Ten 天) can mean 'heaven' or 'god'. The second characte...

Although I have no stance in this argument, I think it is worth noting that the kalama Sutta was aimed at non-Buddhists

Re: California Tendai Learning Center

Does the Tendai school in Japan now mostly focus on esoteric practices or is it more of a balance between those and the original meditation styles (Six sublime gates, Calming and Contemplation, etc) taught by Zhi Yi? It is more of a balance, but meditation in Tendai Temples in Japan is a not really...

Re: California Tendai Learning Center

I've been curious about this for a while- what does lay Tendai practice look like? Things like what is the setup for home practice, altars, procedures etc. Plenty of resources in the Tendai section of this forum, including the lay daily liturgy and Butsudan set-up. Re: Why and how did karma come into existence?

There are several different scientific theories on how this universe came to existence. One such theory is that the big bang that created our universe was created by a previous universe collapsing. And in turn, the collapse of this universe will cause another big bang and the creation of another uni...

Re: Nichiren/tendai original enlightenment

Think about this for a while; "comes from (ie created by)"... vs.... "expression of (ie is no different to)"....

Then take a look at the "Honbutsu" (Original Buddha) discussion here https://dharmawheel.net/viewtopic.php?t=24304
