Re: Help on shamatha

Does anyone have any advice given by great masters or rinpoche on their advice for Shamatha meditation? I’m currently doing it on a daily basis. The usual advice is to begin with short sessions on a daily basis. Also , what does Shamatha aim to achieve ultimately ? Shamatha means “peaceful abiding”...

Children do need discipline. If left free they will meet with many problems when they leave and enter society.
Yes, I agree. Discipline not punishment. The very best thing you can do for your children is to model the values and behaviour you expect of them.

I suggest asking this question of one of the Siddhartha's Intent's instructors in your region. The list of regions can be found on the homepage of the SI website. Then just follow the link to get information about the local contact.

Re: A different look at Guru Yoga

I understand, of course, that he's moving to get a good slice of what will remain of Rigpa when the dust has settled. Do you have any proof of this or is it just unsubstantiated gossip meant to cast aspersions on a teacher's credibility? Indeed. Rinpoche has more than enough students and responsibi...

I'm sorry to tell you Simon, but it probably wasn't your advice that prompted this. :D

Re: Response to Bernie

For what it's worth I am of the view that the best thing he can do both for Rigpa and for Vajrayana in the west is shut the frack up about the issue. Which he has now done. This has been posted on his Facebook page. In the midst of all my imperfections. I can claim only a tiny bit of pure motivatio...

Hopefully that's not going to happen, Greg. I would happily prostrate to both of them. Haven't watched all of the video yet, but I admire KOTR's courage and compassion. Let's hope some good comes of it.

Re: What place does pilgrimage have in Buddhist practice?

...I find great inspiration in spending time in environments where Buddhism has been practiced widely as part of general culture for a long time. I've not been to Tibet, but heartily recommend any Western Vajrayana practitioner make the effort to visit Bhutan, Nepal, and Sikkim. You can thank me la...

Re: Dealing with ant infestation

We recently had an bull ant infestation in, of all places, our linen cupboard. It turned out they were attracted to a couple of small bars of soap. I removed those with tongs shaking off the ants that were still clinging to them and then, because it was on carpet, put down a number of pieces of A4 p...

Re: Realisation and its down side?

You've already been offered some good suggestions, but maybe you can also challenge your current response, at least intellectually, with some positive thoughts about impermanence. For example, when you encounter difficult circumstances you can always rely on them changing. There is also joy in ephem...

Re: Monastic Tibetan Buddhists Fear Death More

I've always found part of the rebirth principle confusing. If a Lama recognises their mala, for example, from their past life, does it not contradict the idea that the mental continuum does not carry such things from life to life? I sometimes reflect on that. I have read that when re-incarnated lam...

Re: a question regarding the Diamond Sutra

The four reliances seem relevant to this discussion: http://www.rigpawiki.org/index.php?title=Four_reliances It's also helpful to consider that it can take time to understand the meaning. I can remember comparing line by line the translation of two lojong texts as a beginner, but really that's not t...

Re: a question regarding the Diamond Sutra

Why does the Buddha first talk about "the four-line verse" for a number of times, as if everyone knows it, and then speaks of the stanza only in the end, or almost at the end? The organization of the text does not appear logical to me. The meaning of the "four verses" references is explained pretty...
