Re: Question about transmission and pointing-out instructions

This might be a ridiculously naive question (seems to be my specialty) but here goes: Can one receive formal transmissions and pointing-out instructions from a qualified teacher remotely, over an electronic medium such as Skype? If not ... are people who cannot travel to the teacher's actual locati...

Re: Types of emanations

Thank you for these fresh perspective on monasteries, Cone.

With some institutions leading the way, I sincerely hope that positive change for all will allow monasteries and nunneries to remain one of the viable means of the transmitting the dharma. Travelling roadshows also have their drawbacks.

Like your current signature Dzogchungpa. OCR is coming to me hometown very soon and I'm hoping he'll rock my world too.

I just did his dream yoga thing at Pema Osel Ling. His world-rocking abilities appear undiminished.
How fortunate! I hope I get to do that sometime too.

Personally I prefer youthful innocence to double entendre DGA. In 1964, when the Millie Small version was released most of us were innocents.

Sometimes I experience alternatives of this or that in the voice of my optometrist. How about A... or B? OK, now, A... or B? so on the long drive from work to my daughter's childcare, this A... or B? troubled me. The worst song ever recorded. A... [media]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dwrHCa9t0dM[...

Re: The DJKR Topic

Discuss your view of DJKR. I have never met him but I find it refreshing that there is a Tibetan Lama who does not take seriously concepts like 'rape culture' and 'patriarchy'. These are political concepts, grounded in a strand of postmodern thought originating in the 1970's and 80's unknown to the...

Re: The concept of the teacher’s “blessings”

When a westerner can do the things I've seen Tibetans do then fine. Until then, stick to the undiluted source. Tibetans are also exempt from misinterpretation and misassumptions? They don’t hear the teachings insisting the Dharma must be compatible with a post-modern, culturally relativistic, deepl...

Wow, I have always found the Diamond Sutra to be really profound,
describing the illusory nature of appearances, concepts and labels.
It's also a very quick read, as sutras tend to go.
Isn't that why there are 84,000....

Yes, there are "ethical" superannuation funds around too. I guess you'd have to check how ethical.

Your willingness to speak, Greg, has surely helped to highlight this issue. Well done!

Re: Tibetan Buddhist beginner - questions!

It's great you're planning to attend your local Tibetan Buddhist centre, KiwiNFLFan. You just need to be a little careful, because there's a few charlatans out there. If you tell us which one, someone should be able to confirm they are reputable. A common place to start is shamatha meditation. Here'...

I agree that it's very difficult for the family and friends left behind and something to be seriously considered, to the extent possible, when contemplating suicide. I hope things get better for you and your family members soon, AvaLily. On the other hand, I have seen families pressuring those with ...

Re: Without Requirement

Does anyone know a practice that DOESN'T require an empowerment? I keep finding that every deity has an empowerment. Chenrezig requires one, Tara requires one, Manjushri requires one, Padmasambhava requires one, other deities require one, and even Shakyamuni Buddha requires one! How can one practic...

What is the point of doing rituals like this, if one does not have the ability to perceive these beings? It sounds like blind faith to me. Indiscriminate negative health effects from pollution can be explained perfectly without believing in ghosts. Believing in nagas without direct perception is cu...

Re: Right Buddhist teaching, wrong method of Dharma practice

What is the way/method to practice Buddhist Dharma? Chanting? The way to practice is with good motivation. As the article you are quoting says - not for worldly purposes, but (in the Mahayana tradition) for enlightenment in order to truly help others. Chanting is one of a range of methods. The Budd...

Ok. I'd have to go back to my previous notes, but I thought the second kind of suffering had to do with the impermanent condition nature of all phenomena and the third kind of suffering related to basic dualism. No, the second kind of suffering has to do with the unreliable nature of mundane happin...
