Re: Strategies for Keeping Practice in the West

Then no matter how you unwell you feel, no matter how little time you think you have, no matter how busy at work you think you are, somehow you find the time. Some provisos, of course, but for most of us this is all that'...

Re: Burning Dharma Materials

Yes, I'm planning to donate some books to a local dharma centre.

Thanks for everyone's input about the papers. I bought a shredder.

Re: Burning Dharma Materials

No temple, no burner. And vajrayana texts cannot be just randomly be left on literature tables anyway. I guess I'll end up burning them and contributing to both greenhouse gases and worsening the asthma hazards in my home town.

Re: Burning Dharma Materials

Thanks Greg.

Maybe I can ask this question in another way: Is the burning of unwanted dharma materials specified in sutras or is it simply tradition?

Re: Burning Dharma Materials

It's always good to remember that mostly it's our attitude that counts. Our respect towards Dharma that arises spontaneously when we start to give it the proper appreciation. The way we dispose of these materials must reflect that and will very naturally. That seems more important than the practica...

Re: New school opening in Woodstock, NY

Good luck would be nice if it worked, but honestly I think religion should stay out of schools. Yes, this is the conventional view these days. As if public schools do not impart any kind of philosophy, conformity or stifling of creativity. Naturally they do, just like every state does, but it is be...

Re: DNA TESTS

Thank you for starting this thread Mantrik. It's reignited my interest in family history. I'm going to order the test through LivingDNA as all of the family connections we are aware of are in Britain. I'm most interested in our Jewish ancestry. My great grandmother migrated from Islington, London wh...

Re: New school opening in Woodstock, NY

Good luck to them. The last venture I came across, run admittedly by dippy Buddhists who failed to understand the UK's requirements for a school curriculum, safety etc. , closed before the Govt could actually shut it down as as putting children at risk. If there are local legal, staffing, welfare a...

Sorry Joseph. I should have thought to post this earlier.

How very fortunate for Lama Zopa Rinpoche (FPMT) students to have him back in Australia again.

Re: Help on shamatha

Does anyone have any advice given by great masters or rinpoche on their advice for Shamatha meditation? I’m currently doing it on a daily basis. The usual advice is to begin with short sessions on a daily basis. Also , what does Shamatha aim to achieve ultimately ? Shamatha means “peaceful abiding”...

Children do need discipline. If left free they will meet with many problems when they leave and enter society.
Yes, I agree. Discipline not punishment. The very best thing you can do for your children is to model the values and behaviour you expect of them.

Re: Does receiving Ngondro entail taking Samaya vows

I suggest asking this question of one of the Siddhartha's Intent's instructors in your region. The list of regions can be found on the homepage of the SI website. Then just follow the link to get information about the local contact.
