Re: Tāranātha's biography of Buddhagupta?

Becoming Indian : a study of the life of the 16-17th century Tibetan Lama, Tāranātha The focus of this study does not fall exclusively upon Tāranātha himself, although that is the main context. It also examines two Indian siddhas, Sāntigupta and Buddhaguptanātha, through whom Tāranātha authenticate...

Tāranātha's biography of Buddhagupta?

Does anyone know if Tāranātha's biography of Buddhagupta is in English translation? I have Tāranātha's "History of Buddhism in India" (Lama Chimpa, Alaka Chattopadhyaya translation), and his "Seven Instruction Lineages" (David Templeman translation), neither of which include sect...

Re: Suggestions for a mini-retreat at home?

9 days is a lot for beginner. 3 or 4 days is probably better. No music. Be resigned to boredom and acedia, especially after lunch. Then and first thing in the morning are the most testing times. Be resolute. Diligence that takes you through is more important than effort in the practices. Consider h...

Re: Suggestions for a mini-retreat at home?

Stock up on food, etc that you will need so that you don't have to break the retreat going out for supplies. Ask a person to be an emergency contact to get supplies (eg medicine, if you get sick) for you if you need them, and let them know that your contact with them will be less than minimal: &quo...

Re: Suggestions for a mini-retreat at home?

I find it also supportive to clean the room physically, arrange everything nicely with offerings also, and clean the "athmosphere" with sage smoke and positive prayers. And I use to take the "lay-vows for one day". These measures help me to change my normal living room into a re...

Re: Suggestions for a mini-retreat at home?

I do such retreats several times throughout the year. They are very worthwhile. Terma's advice is all good. Depending on what practices you have transmission for, it's a good idea to focus on one practice. If you have commitments to recite other texts, do them once during the day, but create four o...

Re: Suggestions for a mini-retreat at home?

These kind of short "home retreats" are good to do. First off, I would suggest laying some ground rules for yourself like no Internet, tv, and keep any unnecessary interaction with anyone to an absolute minimum. One of my teachers said that a retreat is like a kind of "boundry" ...

Suggestions for a mini-retreat at home?

Greetings all, I have some vacation time coming up in April. Rather than going out of town I intend to use the time for a mini-retreat for focused Dharma practice. I am single, and live alone (housemates are upstairs, but I have my own separate living space, shared with my cat), so interruptions wil...

Re: Jetsun Taranatha

In other news, I was very fortunate to receive a copy of Taranatha's Lamrim as a gift from a friend during my time in the Dharamshala area this year. It's a must have for serious practitioners, and is invaluable no matter what stage of the path you're on. If anyone doesn't already have it, get your...

Re: Question about mental/emotional conditions

Giving food wholly, animal liberation*. EDIT: Animal liberation is easy to do if done correctly. You can't just let a domesticated animal go in the wild. Good practice for everybody from H H Chatral Rinpoche, Lama Zopa Rinpoche, and Something disadvantaged kids can do. Feeding others of course is a...

Re: Question about mental/emotional conditions

IMO it' useless to split too many hairs about this teaching -- if there is any condition present that interferes with one's receiving and understanding the Dharma, that is unfortunate. That makes sense, and I tentatively agree. At the same time I also tend to investigate specif word choice in sutra...

Re: Question about mental/emotional conditions

If a person is distracted enough for [...] them to consider it a disorder, then they should focus instead on fixing that capacity to focus first - to reach a point where they are able to focus on the path instead. This is touching upon the gist of my inquiry. I have known several people who were at...

Question about mental/emotional conditions

A question has arisen in my recent lamrim contemplations, specifically about the precious human life. Gampopa and Taranatha both teach in their lamrims that the 'precious human life' is not just being human in and of itself, but rather, what makes the precious human life precious is the freedoms and...
