Re: No end to samsara?

I also think there are many unexplained things in the behaviour of bacteria, as an example. How can we know they do not somehow perceive their surroundings? Bacteria have bacterial conjugation . Bacteria move from one place to another place, why would they do that? Do they have an awareness of an o...

Re: The Importance of Studying the Arts/Sciences While Studying Dharma

In the Mahayana the five Vidya-sthanas or Branches of learning, which belong to the Perfection of Virya or Energy, are: Buddhist philosophy, logic or dialectics, grammar, medicine, technical arts and crafts. This is told in Har Dayal's Bodhisattva Doctrine in Buddhist Sanskrit Literature . A link to...

Re: What is reborn after death?

I know the suttas and sutras are reported to be Shakyamuni Buddha’s words, his teachings. You believe what is reported. You don't know do you? Do you believe Shakyamuni Buddha taught Mahayana and Tantra? I don’t know if Shakyamuni Buddha actually spoke the words as recorded in each and every sutta a...

Re: Can you make fire with just two sticks and your hands?

I'm not sure what you want to know, there are many videos in the YouTube in this topic, like "how to make a fire using sticks" etc... and about various "primitive" technologies of making fire. They are interesting, and maybe usefull if you find yourself in a rain in a dark forest alone.

Re: What is reborn after death?

"During the period between death and the next birth, a being is said to exist as a spirit composed of subtle types of the five skandhas (aggregates). Did the Buddha give any teachings about “the period between death and the next birth” or about “a spirit composed of subtle types of the five skandha...

Re: What is reborn after death?

Being of the intermediate state is reborn. It is called "gandharva" or "gandhabba" in the Sravakayana sutras/suttas. It is mentioned in the sutras, but all of the early schools did not accept it. What? A gandharva is a class of beings. Not all sentient beings arise as gandharva. Do you mean as an e...

Re: No end to samsara?

Also, there are many places in the teachings of Dharma that state that there is no consciousness or awareness without an object. Consciousness arises depending on the six senses and the objects of the senses. There is no independent or separate consciousness. Claiming such would be same as grasping...

Re: No end to samsara?

Your correction doesn't refute my post. I didn't say that consciousness arises without an object of consciousness. I said that the potential awareness that arises as consciousness exists prior to any contact with an object. Otherwise, consciousness would arise without a cause. This potential awaren...

Re: No end to samsara?

If you ask, "how can there be awareness of it isn't consciousness?" , consider that If I enter a completely light-proof room, a room that is completely dark, even though I possess the potential ability, the optical apparatus needed to see objects, there is no consciousness of any objects in the roo...

Re: No end to samsara?

In that case Arhats, Bodhisattvas or Buddhas would not perceive time, would not perceive past, present or future, but that clearly is not the case.

Re: No end to samsara?

If we take the geologic time scale as the common truth, where is the beginning of "samsara"? There were no "infinite number" of beings on Earth 540 million years ago. There were no days, no winter or summer before the formation of the solar system. How did time exist then? Geologic time and the eve...

Re: What is reborn after death?

It has been pointed out before several times by many researchers, for example Sravasti Dhammika in Guide to Buddhism A2Z , Hirakawa Akira & Paul Groner in History of Buddhism from Shakyamuni to Early Mahayana , and Etienne Lamotte in History of Indian Buddhism . In Sarvastivadin Abhidharma there is ...

Sravasti Dhammika has written about usury in his Dhamma musings. Related articles about economics in the Tripitaka exist in the Buddhism a2z, e.g.:

Re: What is reborn after death?

I've learned that according to Buddhism, personality consists of five elements (Five skandhas). And that our life it is a set of moments. Nothing is permanent. But I still can't get one thing. For example, a person, because of disease will lose feelings, will he not be a person or personality? He w...
