Re: Collective karma
Coming back to the original question, Vasubandhu defines and describes collective karma in an old thread, see : https://www.dharmawheel.net/viewtopic.php?f=77&t=10766

Re: (Why) Did the Buddha grief his family?
Hello, [...] So why did he go into the forest (to hide?) after the death of the Shakya clan and saying he felt empty after the deaths of Sariputra and Maugdalayana? The Buddha didn't say that he "felt empty". He said ( Ukkacela Sutta , emphasis mine): "Bhikkhus, this assembly appears to me empty no...

Re: Bodhi Day Fish Release 8th Dec
If you read these articles, you will find that the case seems to be that there is a thriving business behind the "release of life". I.e. that the animals are caught for the purpose of selling them to the ignorant, naive and/or hypocrite buddhists searching for "merit". If the animals are caught in t...

Re: Bodhi Day Fish Release 8th Dec
It is not irrelevant. If a person is catching fish with the intention of selling them for naive and faithfull for "procuring merit". Karma is intention and what is intended.
You must ask Poseidon, or an other God of the Sea, and ask what he thinks, whether the fish are benefited or not?

There is an article about the Diet of Buddha in Guide to Buddhism A 2 Z, which is informative and most interesting. For some obscure reason I can't form a link to it.

Re: Marsipan stolle
Oh dear... some minutes ago facebook reminded me of this photo of my homemade Marzipan Stollen I baked exactly one year ago today *sigh* Unfortunately meanwhile I've decided to cut down on sugar (for a given reason :emb: ), so this year it will only be a miniature one for me, if at all. PS: @Aemili...

Marsipan stolle
There appears to be some contrversy about the origin of marsipan. The stuff is well known in China and in the arabic cuisine, but many people would like to believe that it was invented in Europe. As Sravasti Dhammika is preparing a book about the food at the time of Gautama, may be he has some ideas...

Re: How to believe in rebirth
Your metaphor is not very good or satisfactory, to say the least. What does the truck in it stand for? Who is sitting at the wheel? The traditional metaphor for the 5 skandhas (one found in the 12 links) is better, i.e. a boat with four people in it, one of whom holds a rudder. This metaphor makes a...

Re: Why and how did karma come into existence?
I wouldn't spend (waste?) too much time trying to reconcile evolutionary history with karma. Karma is not a naturalistic theory, although I would hope it doesn't contradict naturalism. But there are many imponderables involved. For instance, one of them is that the human notion of time is inextrica...

Re: Did the 84 mahasiddhas practice Ngöndro?
In the beginning of many Mahayana sutras, the interlocutor is described as first prostrating to the Chom-den-de (i.e., Buddha) before sitting down and asking his or her question. Sravakayana tradition knows two types of bowing, the bowing with respectful salutation of hands, añjali-kamma , and the ...

Re: Did the 84 mahasiddhas practice Ngöndro?
The 111,1111 accumulations are a new invention relatively speaking. My own research seems to indicate this was a product of the 18th century revitalization and codification of the Sarma Traditions associated Khyentse, Kongtrul and Wangpo. In the Life of Tsongkhapa by Robert Thurman , he describes h...

Re: Did the 84 Mahasiddhas practice Ngöndro?
So what is the actual question? -did the Mahasiddhas practice Ngöndro, or something else? Ngöndro means "that which goes before", i.e. preliminary. In the Life of Milarepa the four ordinary ngondro are mentioned, i.e. "the four thoughts that turn the mind", -this takes place when he meditated near M...
