Re: SGI had to "create" a new religion after excommunication for copyright/tax reasons?

I have been a member since the 1970's and saw (from a distance) the schism as it happened. The practice is the same as it ever was : reciting the Lotus Sutra and chanting its title (Nam Myoho Renge Kyo). The former has been shortened significantly to make it possible for people to practice "correcct...

Re: Best country to live in to practice Mahayana Buddhism?

I suggest that you practice to the best of your ability where you are and you will naturally find a teacher or one will find you.

I must offer my commendation for instructing your future self to read the above.
The Diamond Sutra is a very high sutra.
Again, I think you're doing everything right on your path of discovery.

Re: Questioning My Compatibility With Theravada Buddhism

tony, I suspect you are continuing on a path that you have been on for many lifetimes. Interestingly enough, just the other day I was reading from the writings of Nichiren... "...if one is speaking to persons who one knows have the capacity to become wise, then one should first instruct them in the ...

Re: Questioning My Compatibility With Theravada Buddhism

Reading the later posts, it looks like you're finding some answers, tony. That's great. "So I would definitely encourage you to seek out flesh-and-blood Sanghas of all different (non-cultish) traditions and also treat the actual experience as practice, including all the emotions that arise." I think...

Re: Questioning My Compatibility With Theravada Buddhism

After being a Theravada Buddhist for about 12 years, I'm starting to question my compatibility with this school. In the communities I frequent, renunciate practices like Satipaṭṭhāna are heavily emphasized over traditional lay and devotional practices. Furthermore, the mere mention of using the tea...

Re: Nichiren's relationship with Shijo Kingo?

While I wouldn't go so far as to say certain *religions* would be banned or that *buddhadharma* specifically is the last best hope, I actually have considered writing such a statement to officials here that the dignity of life and inherent worth of each person (which is the heart of the Lotus Sutra...

I just throw mine in the garbage when they're worn out. It's recommended you keep them with you at all times while you're using them, but there's no special protocol I ever heard of for disposing of them. If you practice by yourself, study hard and expect to find people to learn from sooner or late...

Re: Nichiren's relationship with Shijo Kingo?

That Soka Gakkai stuff is more likely crafted by and towards the preferences of the reigning global oligarchy than in contrast to it, I think. The indirect, concatenative, and hidden implications of words and ideas is interesting to unpack in regard to subjects like this. Why do you say that? What r...

Nam myoho renge kyo is so powerful that some people who practice for even unsavory purposes can gain merit by chanting, even a little bit.

1. Find someone to share those doubts and fears with. If you can't, bring those doubts right here.

2. Study Buddhism daily as a part of your practice.

Re: What will happen when Daisaku Ikeda dies?

We disagree on a lot of things then. If the gohonzon is Shakyamuni then by worshipping the gohonzon I'm worshipping Shakyamuni. But you don't realize it until it's pointed out to you? Why didn't you know this? Maybe your teachers obfuscated? Why did they do that? I said "if." I don't believe the Go...

Re: What will happen when Daisaku Ikeda dies?

"If the Gosho is the final authority, why do you demean Shakyamuni Buddha?" I don't have the same relationship with Shakyamuni that I have with President Ikeda and Nichiren Daishonin. I don't understand the Lotus Sutra. I can only intuitively sense what it's really about. For me, all these relations...

Re: Etsy Gohonzon store: what do y’all think?

Some of the other ( than Fuji School) Nichiren sects are ok with selling gohonzon's without initiation so for them it's probably ok.
It wasn't ok per Taiseki Ji before the temple/gakkai split.
I wouldn't judge but I wouldn't mess with it either.
