Re: Why do we have to do continuous daimoku?

Nichiren Daishonin states : "Q : How many daimoku does it take to reach enlightenment? A : One is enough. A million is not enough." Do you have a citation for that? I'm pretty sure it's not in the SGI translations into English, but I clearly remember it quoted years ago in the WT. We could look at ...

Re: Why is Nichiren Buddhism (or at least its organizations) so dysfunctional?

To expand on my previous comment : The U.S. organization is very much a work in progress. It was not meant to, nor could it ever, be the same organization that blossomed in Japan after the war. I think this was intentional. Sure we had guidance from the top, but in my experience we were given some g...

Re: Why is Nichiren Buddhism (or at least its organizations) so dysfunctional?

SGI-USA is still an infant that hasn't even learned to crawl. The only reason it has taken root, even a little bit in western countries, is because it works.
No, we don't know what we're doing. That's the thorny path awaiting any pioneer.

Re: What is the 'Law'?

The word for 'Law' in sanskrit is 'Dharma' (i.e. the first word in the forum name). In Theravada there are the 'Three Dharma Seals'. So I'm wondering what relation these three seals have to the Law of the Lotus, if any at all? By the three seals, do you mean suffering, no-self and the middle way? W...

Re: Should a person be embarrassed for leaving Buddhism just to realize it's the truth and return?

The seeds do take root. Eventually; even in those who at first oppose it. I've been around for a while. I've seen a lot of people take faith for a time and then let it fade out or walk away from it completely. I would hear "Isn't that too bad" but I always thought of the phrase in the sutra : one wh...

Re: Should a person be embarrassed for leaving Buddhism just to realize it's the truth and return?

Good heavens, no. For so, so, many of us it's been our karma to quit for one reason or another only to find that you can never get away from the gohonzon, and then get back to work on things. I think whether we stop practicing and start again later or not, we have to at some point confront our doubt...

KanseCapon, each new translation I read tells me a little bit more about what it really means. Yours is the only one I haven't heard before, so I am in your debt. Thank you very much indeed. :namaste:

Re: The Writings of Nichiren

Three translations of a passage from the Gift of Rice: "Without food, I could not long continue to recite the sutra or concentrate on MEDITATION (Major Works) "Under these circumstances [without food], my voice reciting the sutra would not long endure nor could I concentrate on FAITH. (1972 Nichire...

Re: Is Avici hell eternal?

It's like how long can you wait? When you're in great pain you don't know if you can stand another minute of it. After a few million years it might well feel like it will never end. We mortals go nuts at far shorter bad experiences.

Re: Is Avici hell eternal?

No condition is eternal. It has to change, and does, eventually. The ten worlds are eternal, so hell is eternal. Enlightenment is eternal so the other nine worlds are eternal as well.
