Re: Do you have to believe in spirits, deities, etc to be a Nichiren Buddhist?

Thoughts? I don't speak for the soka gakkai, but I do know that President Toda said it was up to you if wanted to believe in gods and dragons and buddhas or not. The important thing is practicing correctly. As far as the Gosho addresses it, I'd refer to "On Attaining Buddhahood": "Never seek any of...

Not a nichiren guy, but one quote from Nagarjuna stuck in my head AFAIR it goes something like this: Since everything is empty everything is possible.
Thank you for reminding me of that. :namaste:

Re: A few questions on forgiveness...

Nichiren had much to forgive in his lifetime, having been persecuted so much. He mentions in the gosho that he knew before he started that he would suffer, and vowed not to hate anyone who carried out such deeds. He then says that in spite of everything, "I remain safe to this day. This vow may have...

Re: Kosen Rufu Prayer

Think of specific ways to link progress at work to kosen-rufu, like "I want this because it will lead to prosperity for both me and the company. By winning at work I vow to tell people about the benefit of the Gohonzon." Which is the best propagation, and leads one more step closer to kosen rufu.

Re: Advice for young buddhists

The whole Nichiren Shonin is the Primordial Buddha thing is cool and i used to get excited at the possibilities....but it totally changes everything to do with the history and lineage of the Lotus Sutra and the very essence of Lord Shakyamuni now revealing this teaching to His Time. It sure does. If...

Re: Advice for young buddhists

I'd tell my younger self to find a copy of President Ikeda's "Ode to Youth"(published in 1974) and study it harder than I did then. I did read and think about it back then, but it is a rich work of instruction.

Re: whats it all about anyway

Now let us over lay this to the dynamic the OP has discussed. One that I have spoken out about at times as well. Are the causes, conditions and capacities here so homogeneous that a one size fits all teaching can be easily disseminated and shared as if one cup is being poured into another? Obviously...

Re: whats it all about anyway

Minobu : In my view, there was never a person more intent on changing society through correct practice than Nichiren. His stated reason for resolving to master Buddhism was to "repay my debt of gratitude to my country." At that place and at that time one could not be said to be practicing impeccably...

Re: Path to full enlightenment

" [/I wondered whether Nichiren Buddhism had kinds of targets to aim for in a similar way. For instance, whether a rebirth is hoped for where one will be exposed to the Lotus Sutra’s teachings again.i] The Lotus Sutra contains many passages stating that hearing even one verse of the sutra guarantees...

Re: Why do we have to do continuous daimoku?

Nichiren Daishonin states : "Q : How many daimoku does it take to reach enlightenment? A : One is enough. A million is not enough." Do you have a citation for that? I'm pretty sure it's not in the SGI translations into English, but I clearly remember it quoted years ago in the WT. We could look at ...
