Re: I'm finding it hard to make positive changes in my life

There could be a number of reasons you're not seeing benefits. Let's work on this together until you see some results. First, keep in mind that the Gohonzon is the Buddha, and the Buddha's desire is to see all living beings become happy, starting with you. Chant with appreciation, even when things l...

Re: Introducing the practice of Daimoku to friends and relatives

It's time to dialog with those of other faiths and learn from them. A Christian teacher recently wrote about his meeting with President Ikeda and remarked that the experience had made him a better Christian.

Re: Questioning My Compatibility With Theravada Buddhism

tonysharp: The Lotus Sutra is indeed unique among sutras in many ways. Nichiren said that it differs from the Theravadin sutras as heaven differs from earth. The sutra also says it is "difficult to believe..." Even Shariputra, foremost in wisdom, said "At first, when I heard the Buddha’s preaching, ...

Re: Questioning My Compatibility With Theravada Buddhism

tony : Your posts tell me you're advancing quickly. What you're doing, keep doing it. I'm intrigued by your antipathy to the Lotus Sutra too, which, I think, is something that might be worth observing. I share your frustration with the master-disciple thing. But fwiw, finding a bad teacher is worse ...

Re: SGI had to "create" a new religion after excommunication for copyright/tax reasons?

I have been a member since the 1970's and saw (from a distance) the schism as it happened. The practice is the same as it ever was : reciting the Lotus Sutra and chanting its title (Nam Myoho Renge Kyo). The former has been shortened significantly to make it possible for people to practice "correcct...

I suggest that you practice to the best of your ability where you are and you will naturally find a teacher or one will find you.

I must offer my commendation for instructing your future self to read the above.
The Diamond Sutra is a very high sutra.
Again, I think you're doing everything right on your path of discovery.

Re: Questioning My Compatibility With Theravada Buddhism

tony, I suspect you are continuing on a path that you have been on for many lifetimes. Interestingly enough, just the other day I was reading from the writings of Nichiren... "...if one is speaking to persons who one knows have the capacity to become wise, then one should first instruct them in the ...

Re: Questioning My Compatibility With Theravada Buddhism

Reading the later posts, it looks like you're finding some answers, tony. That's great. "So I would definitely encourage you to seek out flesh-and-blood Sanghas of all different (non-cultish) traditions and also treat the actual experience as practice, including all the emotions that arise." I think...

Re: Questioning My Compatibility With Theravada Buddhism

After being a Theravada Buddhist for about 12 years, I'm starting to question my compatibility with this school. In the communities I frequent, renunciate practices like Satipaṭṭhāna are heavily emphasized over traditional lay and devotional practices. Furthermore, the mere mention of using the tea...

Re: Nichiren's relationship with Shijo Kingo?

While I wouldn't go so far as to say certain *religions* would be banned or that *buddhadharma* specifically is the last best hope, I actually have considered writing such a statement to officials here that the dignity of life and inherent worth of each person (which is the heart of the Lotus Sutra...

I just throw mine in the garbage when they're worn out. It's recommended you keep them with you at all times while you're using them, but there's no special protocol I ever heard of for disposing of them. If you practice by yourself, study hard and expect to find people to learn from sooner or late...
