Re: What is the best way to deal with narcissistic slander?

well, the most effective thing is to chant for their happiness. The horrific karma they receive for slandering you is guaranteed.
This is a very very good question to ask the gohonzon. it turns poison into medicine. I mean it.

Sounds like a good chance to develop your debating and interpersonal skills, both of which the Gohonzon can be a great help with.
Chant slowly and carefully as you pick out the logical fallacies involved. Most of all, rely on faith.

Re: End of suffering

You have suffered greatly, my friend. You have been thru a nightmarish experience; uncontrollable emotions, forcibly taken to the hospital. There is no suffering, however great, that Buddhism cannot heal. If you want to practice, you'll find good friends here willing to share what they know. The res...

Re: How does one practice Nichiren Buddhism at home?

I agree with markatex, "you work with what you got.
The important thing, as the Gosho says, is "strong and steadfast faith."
Maintain a steady practice and study...when the time is right, other bodhasattvas will naturally appear in your environment.

Re: Do Nichiren Buddhists believe in God?

I think I remember a passage from the Gosho noting "some people believe in no gods, some think there are many gods...." without , if I recall correctly, making a judgment on which is best.

Re: Surprises in Buddhism?

Some good (and quite valid) observations, pdx. On the "life is suffering angle, I once read a commentary that said The Four Noble Truths and other teachings are like a medical diagnosis and prescription.... "suffering," states the condition "caused by craving" identifies cause "There is a way to end...

Re: Three Obstacles and Four Devils

Quite right, markatex. I think one of those quotes I cited was a letter to the brothers. Thinking about this thread earlier, it struck me that one theme that runs through all the gosho is the Daishonin's conviction that all the suffering in his life was big time sansho shima and a cause for him to r...

...Something uncommon also occurs when an ordinary person attains Buddhahood. At such a time, the three obstacles and four devils will invariably appear, and the wise will rejoice while the foolish will retreat. - The Three Obstacles and Four Devils ....(The Maka Shikan says ) “[As practice progress...

And yet buddhism is for others as well...
So once all cleaned up and enlightened one still does for others...so is it really over?

Re: Why do some people find it hard to let go of the religion they grew up with?

Yes, that's exactly what you should do : just keep up with daily gongyo and study. There's no need to worry much about ties to a previous faith. One senior leader I know used to tell guests at meetings " You don't have to give up your current religion, just add this one to it." Christianity and Budd...

Re: Is it true that chanting brings us blessings and if so, is this dependent on daily, consistent practice?

Yes. Chanting is the way in this muddied age to gain good fortune and reduce bad karma. It's a good idea to do it every day, but you don't suddenly lose all you have gained if you miss gongyo ( practice) once. Observing the practice is a right, not an obligation. On the other hand, it's very much to...

I'm just seeking advise here from a Nichiren Buddhist perspective.
First of all, I'm worried about your safety. Are you being physically abused? Mentally?
Please let me know asap, I care.

You've been around for a while. Maybe almost as long as I. I remember those days with mixed feelings. I totally agree with you on the near-automatic response : "It's your karma, you have to change it" and "oh your life fell apart? congratulations." I had a lot of district leaders and group leaders g...
