Re: If an evil parent causes us to betray or become distracted from our faith, is detaching ourselves the best option?

When you say that my obstacles are all future treasures, what do you mean by that? Would love to hear your thoughts on narcissistic parents influencing us negatively and if putting distance between them is sometimes the only option. There are indeed times when only distance can really untangle you....

Would love to hear your thoughts on narcissistic parents influencing us negatively and if putting distance between them is sometimes the only option. There are indeed times when only distance can really untangle you. Parents are your karma, and it's even predicted in the sutras that one's parents a...

Re: Is it ok to be annoyed with someone?

President Ikeda says "Chant for the person who causes you the most trouble." The Dalai Lama once commented on karma, saying "If you are beaten with a stick, hating the one that beats you is as pointless as hating the stick." Everything that happens in this secular world is a perfectly matched record...

Re: What a buddhist tradition did you choose and why?

I would recommend asking questions to anyone you can find with some knowledge of Buddhism, while studying on your own and putting what you read/hear into practice. The right tradition/teacher will appear in your environment.
This forum is a very good place to ask more questions. :namaste:

Agreed, and I would say the reverse principle is also true: one who has not practiced right conduct in past lives cannot chant the daimoku.

Re: What are the precepts in Nichiren Shoshu?

There is only one precept, the Diamond Precept.

"Once the practitioner embraces this perfectly endowed wonderful precept, he cannot break it, even if he should try. It is therefore called the precept of the diamond chalice"

Re: How do I stop feeling drawn back to the beliefs that I grew up with?

Because you grew up with it, it will always be a part of your life. One friend of mine who was a devoted practitioner of Buddhism used to say "I'm 90% Catholic and 10% Buddhist." My recommendation is study. The Lotus Sutra, the Gosho or both. Carry out your practice with a seeking mind and the "true...

passel :
nichiren's writings are the primary reference, those two sources are very good too.
I think the way to learn most is both read and ask questions.

"The Human Revolution" volume 1 and 2 might be a good place to start.
It's a "novel" about the second president of SGI, who was the first to lead a massive shakubuku campaign in postwar Japan.

Re: why i stopped a daily Nichirenesque practice

One thing the last year or so has taught me, that the more sutras/commentaries I read, the more I practice shikantaza/vipassana/samatha, the more meaningful and transformative I find chanting to be. Yes indeed, I heartily agree. They didn't teach that back in the pioneer days. I imagine that's beca...

AFAIK, the Buddha never polemicized against or for the Cārvāka. Do they postdate him?

Apparently not; I recall a passage in the Lotus Sutra admonishing disciples not to hang with them.

Re: superstition and Nichiren's Teachings

Very good question. Did Hachiman really protect Nichiren from the ronin executioners on the beach? I'd say it only made sense that the light in the sky was a natural phenomenon, like a comet. But why did it appear at just that instant? Your call. Was the Divine wind that swept away the mongols reall...

Re: Bodhisattvas of the Earth

It's not the least bit stupid. The Bodhisattvas of Earth commit grave offenses against the Mystic Law for the purpose of being born into a world where everyone has slandered the law in a past lifetime. If they didn't create the karma to be born in this world, they could not be born here. It's like g...

Queequeg and just, spot on.
President Toda said it's up to you whether you consider the gods, buddhas, etc. as real or fairy tales. I took that to heart.

I've only heard two things about political issues from President Ikeda :
1) The SGI will always be on the side of the people, and
2) Nuclear weapons are an absolute evil, and their existence cannot be tolerated

well, the most effective thing is to chant for their happiness. The horrific karma they receive for slandering you is guaranteed.
This is a very very good question to ask the gohonzon. it turns poison into medicine. I mean it.
