Re: Is world domination SGI’s goal?

Oh, those guys. Yes, they're one of very few such movements we know anything about in the west, infamous for some crimes committed in its name.

Re: Seems Gakki study department has changed it's tune

You do realize that enlightenment and Buddhahood are not one and the same...

What, pray tell, could be the difference? Not to quibble, but this statement does not make sense.

Re: Provisional , transient , terms attributed to Buddhas

Minobu:

I have never seen in any of the gosho any indications that Nichiren called himself a provisional Buddha. Are you familiar with the fifteenth chapter of the Lotus Sutra which describes the Bodhisattvas of the Earth?

Re: can we talk about this/differing sect ideas in Nichiren Schools

I recall reading that the devil king will seek to disrupt the prolongation of the lotus sutra in the later age. There is also a gosho regarding difficulties as proof of medicine working in progress. So as I see it the very challenge presented by the schism is an opportunity for Nichiren practitione...

Your experience is instructive, and your humility in sharing it here is commendable.
I agree with you in part about debate: there's a place for it, but debating anything online is nothing but a recipe for disaster.

Pray for their happiness. The more trouble they cause you, the more you should chant for them.

Re: ? about Bodhisattvas of the Earth

Nichiren was circumspect in his assertions. In one document he says he isn't Jogyo or his disciple, other times he implied he was. I think no matter how you interpret it, literally or figuratively, what's going on today is "emerging from the earth." The Gohonzon didn't spread in the U.S. j...

I joined several years before the split. This is too sensitive for an open thread but I'll be glad to talk about it in private message.

The Soka Gakkai from its inception has been based on the master-disciple relationship.

Re: Do you have to believe in spirits, deities, etc to be a Nichiren Buddhist?

Thoughts? I don't speak for the soka gakkai, but I do know that President Toda said it was up to you if wanted to believe in gods and dragons and buddhas or not. The important thing is practicing correctly. As far as the Gosho addresses it, I'd refer to "On Attaining Buddhahood": "Ne...

Re: A few questions on forgiveness...

Nichiren had much to forgive in his lifetime, having been persecuted so much. He mentions in the gosho that he knew before he started that he would suffer, and vowed not to hate anyone who carried out such deeds. He then says that in spite of everything, "I remain safe to this day. This vow may...

Re: Kosen Rufu Prayer

Think of specific ways to link progress at work to kosen-rufu, like "I want this because it will lead to prosperity for both me and the company. By winning at work I vow to tell people about the benefit of the Gohonzon." Which is the best propagation, and leads one more step closer to kose...

Re: Advice for young buddhists

The whole Nichiren Shonin is the Primordial Buddha thing is cool and i used to get excited at the possibilities....but it totally changes everything to do with the history and lineage of the Lotus Sutra and the very essence of Lord Shakyamuni now revealing this teaching to His Time. It sure does. If...

Re: Advice for young buddhists

I'd tell my younger self to find a copy of President Ikeda's "Ode to Youth"(published in 1974) and study it harder than I did then. I did read and think about it back then, but it is a rich work of instruction.
