Re: Karmic cause become gay

Why are some people born left handed. Because they are. Why are some people born red haired. Because they are. Why are some people born gay. Because they are. Don't stress yourself out worrying about questions that can't be answered and even if they are answered, it's purely speculation. Better to s...

Re: Quitting alcohol. Dharmic advice?

Everything passes, the good times and the bad. I got sober quite a bit of time ago but just yesterday I was talking over the phone with a friend and we both agree that getting sober in the current circumstances would be a lot harder than when we did it. You should be very proud of yourself. Good luc...

Re: Celebrities and Buddhism

Whether a person is or is not a celebrity doesn’t have anything to do with whether they are Buddhists or not. The reason why some celebrities aren’t Buddhists is the same reason why a lot of people on a bus aren’t Buddhists. It’s simply because they aren’t. Definitely the most sensible answer I've ...

Re: C.S. Lewis and Shin

In terms of belief systems, Christianity and Buddhism are worlds apart. But I noticed from attending Pureland services that the Jodo Shinsu Service Book has Buddhist hymns from Japanese sources, which are played on piano. They're very much in the style of Christian hymns - again, not in content, bu...

Re: Jodo Shu, Ethics, and being inept

It reminds me so much of the Christian faith I thought I had left, that it makes me wonder if I should have left it. Interesting thought. It would be great to talk about this in another thread. I see huge differences between Pure Land Buddhism and Christianity, though. The only uniting topic is tha...

Re: How will aviation industry survive the pandemic?

I worked at the airport as a part time gig. I was classified as an aviation security officer. I recieved an email probably 2 weeks ago advising that I was to be stood down for 8 weeks. The part time and permanent staff got an email about a week ago. Tonight is the last shift for many of them. Buddhi...

I feel that closing is the right thing to do. Yes, economically they'll probably suffer a bit but that's better than having monks and nuns falling off the perch one after the other.

Re: In between Taoism and Buddhism

Daoism and Buddhism are totally compatible, if you mean East Asian Buddhism. They grew up together and were eventually integrated together. The Complete Reality School (Quanzhen) assembled Buddhist, Daoist, and Confucian practice. The Secret of the Golden Flower is more Buddhist than Daoist in my v...

Re: Should a person be embarrassed for leaving Buddhism just to realize it's the truth and return?

The Buddha himself taught not to accept teachings just because other people tell you too, but to experiment and see for yourself what's true and what isn't.
It sounds to me that's exactly what you've done.

130. Damn, somedays are easier than others and right now is not one of the easy ones. I feel like my brain and chest are throwing a temper tantrum. :toilet: Not sure if it's been mentioned on this site already, but samsara sucks. ;) Some days are certainly harder than others. Just try to take it on...

Offer an orange, some fruit, or some fresh produce out of kindness. Won’t be spent on deviances and will be a benefit by ceasing hunger.

Re: Starting meditation/sitting group/class at work?

I'm sorry but I have to ask this question.
Exactly what sort of jobs do you have that the boss will give you time off to meditate.
As a matter of fact what sort of boss gives you time off to do anything at all.
If I take time off work either my leave entitlements or my wages are docked.

Re: Prayers for victims of abuse

One thing that I've found that helps me is rather than looking at myself as a victim of childhood sexual abuse is to look at myself as a survivor of child abuse.
I do agree that we need to forgive the abuser in order to get on with our lives.

Very similar in Australia. Strangely enough though originally in Japan many years ago nichiren Buddhism and pureland Buddhism were both designed to appeal to the working class.
