Re: Why not more Farms and Soup kitchens for Buddhist dharma centers, instead of money?

I've always considered Dana (generosity) to be one of the basic ethics of Buddhism.
That's why I'd rather donate money to the salvation army than the local Buddhist temple.
But I've got no control over how Buddhist sanghas view generosity but I do have control over my own wallet.

Re: Without politics this forum has become a little dull

I've been enjoying the lack of political discussion. Just last week I was saying to a mate that if there was a complete media blackout a couple of days a week I'd see it as a pretty good thing.
I suppose, different strokes for different folks.

Re: The nature of European monarchies

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the historical buddha himself from a royal family and one of his most devout lay followers a businessman/merchant. If I'm correct this would prove to me that good and bad can be found in any socioeconomic group, political system, race, religion or any othe...

Re: Are men or women more interested in Enlightenment?

My observation at a thai Buddhist temple in my city is that it's predominantly women who are turning up regularly to prepare the lunchtime meal for the monks, put flowers on the altar and doing some general cleaning.

I agree with Justsit. Funerals aren't for the dead, they're for the friends and family left behind.

Re: Dangers of Marijuana

I find it hard to believe the bit about violence. In my 55years living in a blue collar, working class area, I'm yet to witness an all in brawl among pot heads. Drinkers, gamblers and over women yes, but pot heads no.

Re: Who are your favourite ancient non-Buddhist philosophers?

I've read the analects and it didn't really turn me on that much. But I suppose everyone's tastes and opinions differ. Try Zhongyong / doctrine of the mean. Analects is difficult to read standalone. It's hard to see the major themes (the five virtues, etc.) from a fragmented set of comments Thanks....

Re: Who are your favourite ancient non-Buddhist philosophers?

I know this will not be a popular one... Confucius. I'm not down with the misogyny and strict hierarchy that has come to be associated with Confucianism, but the web of mutual responsibilities founded on brotherly love and respect between members of society is an excellent ideal. It also gives a fo...

Re: China issue death sentence against Canadian

It doesn't really matter what you want to buy, whether it be beer, cigarettes, clothing, sex or drugs generally you'll get a better price in Asia than you would in western countries. Greed is what attracts dealers to Asia. Sure, the dealer isn't 100% responsible for Australia's drug problem but they...

Australia is an educated society. Maybe the alleged dealer should have educated himself on China's drug laws and punishments.

Re: Breaking the law = bad karma?

You definitely risk bad karma by breaking the law. It can lead to fines, community service or even being banged up.
If you don't agree with the laws of a particular country don't go there.
