Re: Socialism & Communism

The problem with that idea Greg is that most people that are financially well off have worked hard and taken a few chances.
If they're then heavily taxed for doing well, it takes a fair bit of the incentive away to initially work hard and taken a few chances.

Re: Socialism & Communism

Communism as practiced was and is inhuman. Fun fact: neither USA nor any other capitalist "developed country" can or could afford free healthcare and free education all the way up to university. Communist countries could. I was born and I grew up in one. Also, no capitalist country ever managed to ...

Re: Australian Parliamentary Elections

Please excuse my ignorance about Aussie politics - So is Labor not taking a majority? Or is there a chance of a coalition between Labor and other left parties? There has been a long standing coalition on the right, but not on the left. Traditionally what you're saying is true but in recent years th...

Is the upset in favor of Liberals comparable to the rightward drift we see around the world? Ie. Nationalistic, xenophobic, racist?
No. In Australia we're a pretty lucky country. It really doesn't matter which party wins, they both cast a pretty similar shadow.

Re: Australian Parliamentary Elections

TAB fixed odds this morning had labor at $1.10 and the coalition at $7.00. I had a double, coalition to win into the one box on the last race at the meadows tonight.
The word politics I believe comes from the Latin, poli meaning many and tics, a blood sucking parasite.

Many factors support this bad habit. Perhaps the 'common mindset' is craving for pleasure & avoiding suffering. Which is really not unique to our time or place.
That's probably the closest answer to the truth.

Re: Another Topic of molesting female practitioner

Maybe we need to remember that these are allegations at this point, not proven facts. If Rinpoche has broken the law then he should be prosecuted, if he has broken his Vinaya discipline then he should sanctioned in accordance with those rules too. But, we don’t yet know that is the case. Very true.

Re: Another Topic of molesting female practitioner

The problem in my opinion is the vow of celibacy. Celibacy goes against human nature generally speaking. The people that take these vows often take them quite young in their lives. I believe that many of them would feel stigmatized and ostracized if they disrobed to lead the life of a lay follower,...

Re: Why not more Farms and Soup kitchens for Buddhist dharma centers, instead of money?

I've always considered Dana (generosity) to be one of the basic ethics of Buddhism.
That's why I'd rather donate money to the salvation army than the local Buddhist temple.
But I've got no control over how Buddhist sanghas view generosity but I do have control over my own wallet.

I've been enjoying the lack of political discussion. Just last week I was saying to a mate that if there was a complete media blackout a couple of days a week I'd see it as a pretty good thing.
I suppose, different strokes for different folks.
