Re: boring questions about losing weight

There's no silver bullet. The only way to lose weight and maintain that weight is through diet and exercise. By what you wrote in your opening post, you've got the exercise covered which only leaves the diet. Cut back sugar and carbs, you can't outrun a bad diet.

It could..but that has nothing to do with the quote from Oscar Wilde, which is a play on words.
That's true. The saying isn't by the buddha or Buddhist based.

Re: Quitting smoking

May I suggest using Swedish snus. It's a tobacco based product and no doubt just as addictive as cigarettes but far less harmful.

Re: Moderation

The buddha described his path as the middle way.
I suppose this could be loosely translated to moderation.

Re: Football World Cup.

:yinyang: 7 They've firmed slightly in the betting at 15-4 To win in extra time 12-1 To win with penalty 9-1 I probably should snap a bit of that up Not bad prices for a 2 horse race. Hmm. 15-4 doesn't look too cheap. But an extra time win at 12-1 is interesting Yeah. I was thinking $20 on extra tim...

Re: Football World Cup.

I'm an Aussie so don't really understand soccer at all but I'll be barracking for Croatia, it's in our DNA to support outsiders. At the moment they're 4-1 in the betting. Those were ridiculous odds. If world cup history teaches us anything, it is that at the critical moment, England will always los...

Re: Boers bent on relocating to Russia

Thanks Dan. That was a good read and I could relate a lot to it. I come from a working class family in a working class town, I joke that it's a bit like Noah's ark, there's at least 2 of everything. We're a bit luckier than in the city. Because of the small size and population, integration is more o...

Re: Boers bent on relocating to Russia

Thanks for your replies Dan. It's refreshing to hear a point of view that's more centered rather than being so far left it's off the road. As a trade union member it's always been a sore spot with me that a percentage of my union fees are used to fund the labor party. Traditionally the labor party w...

The rescue operation is finished and successful. Please remember the Thai navy seal that died in the rescue operation. May his next birth be a favourable one.

Re: Boers bent on relocating to Russia

Sometimes it's hard to believe that this is a Buddhist forum. The boddhisatva aspirations are just overwhelming.
There's 2 sayings that immediately come to mind.
1. If you can't say anything nice don't say anything at all.
2. It doesn't take much brains to keep your mouth shut.

Latest news I've heard is that 4 of the boys are out and in hospital and the rescue has been delayed for a while.

Re: Taking precepts?

Buddhism and meditation can both help to a certain extent with alcoholism but I'd recommend a detox centre first and attending AA meetings on a regular basis. I've been sober for 30 years, not wanting to blow my own trumpet, but form on the board has to count for something. Good luck and best wishes...

Re: Scary Liberal Views and Policy Positions?

A private business should be allowed to do business or not do business with whoever they like without explaining themselves. If a cake shop won't sell me a cake ir a butcher won't sell me a chop, whether it be pork or lamb, the answer is quite simple. I go to another shop and get whatever it was I w...

Re: Religious freedom under attack in Australia

In Australia anyone involved with children at all needs a background check. It's called a "working with vulnerable people and children card" and has to be renewed every 3 years. All sorts of people need them, coaches and managers of junior sports teams, bus and taxi drivers as well as the usual sus...

'First they came for the Catholics and I did not speak out Because I was not a Catholic....' Its religion that is the target here ladies and gents. Lets not kid ourselves. It will lead to children being forbidden to attend Dharma events, by law. I hope it will lead to police checks for anyone teach...

Psychologists and psychiatrists also have a code of patient confidentiality, but they are obliged to report to the police if they feel their patient is going to engage in behaviour that will harm themselves or others: eg if a patient expresses the will to suicide, or murder But are they also obliga...
