Re: Trump's Movement to Unilateralism

It's also ultimately fiction, like every other theory about ... well, pretty much everything.

But, yes, I agree: It's a nice fairy tale, after great adversity comes great reward. "When you wish u-pon a star ... "

Re: Trump's Movement to Unilateralism

The Fourth Turning is a Crisis. Old Artists die, Prophets enter elderhood, Nomads enter midlife, Heroes enter young adulthood—and a new generation of child Artists is born. This is an era in which America’s institutional life is torn down and rebuilt from the ground up—always in response to a perce...

Re: The origin of "life" on earth

What would we do with all our energy if we didn't spend so much of it wondering about the nature of the universe?

Re: The Four Turnings, Howe and Strauss

From the Howe and Strauss book, The Fourth Turning : Turnings come in cycles of four. Each (full, four-turning) cycle spans the length of a long human life, roughly eighty to one hundred years, a unit of time the ancients called the saeculum. Together, the four turnings of the saeculum comprise hist...

Re: The origin of "life" on earth

Another way to look at it: Life (living organisms) is the primary entity, non-living matter/energy serves to complexify, strengthen, and spread life. I'm not endorsing or denouncing this view, just sharing it. (Mine is more: A "living" organism is a temporary sub-process within The Grand Process, ju...

The Four Turnings, Howe and Strauss

The state of The State got me thinking about The Fourth Turning by historians Howe and Strauss. (This is the book that drives Steve Bannon's view of the current global situation.) Is the four-turnings loop — high, awakening, unraveling, crisis ... high, awakening, unraveling, crisis ... — a kind of ...

Re: Trump's Movement to Unilateralism

We love our stories ... and no story has more raw power than GOOD vs. EVIL. It's one of the reasons that the Madhyamaka view is so tough to digest, it turns the whole GOOD/EVIL thingie upside down and round and round.

I'm confused. Aren't all left-leaners good/smart/peaceful and all right-leaners bad/stupid/violent? That's what my news shows keep telling me ... and how can they be wrong, they're on TV (CABLE TV!) and the INTERNET!

Re: Trump's Movement to Unilateralism

Thanks, everyone. What's the deal with these guys in terms of their leanings: New Republic Guardian Foreign Policy BBC Al Jareeza The Hill ? Also, since I love to read opinions ... which editorialists/co-op writers do the best work iyo, all across the board (left to right)? Fareed Zakaria is my favo...

Re: Trump's Movement to Unilateralism

Like 99% of Americans these days, I choose my news/opinion sources to support my views: liberal, left-leaning, anti-Trump. I've tried to include non-left-leaning news/opinion sources in my reading list ... but never really found anything/anyone that clicked with me. Can anyone here recommend some go...

Re: Trump's Movement to Unilateralism

Trump will be able to manipulate class to his advantage until it becomes a central part of the political conversation on the left again. Makes sense. So maybe one can see The Donald as a kind of necessary, if painful, course correction? A bit of: See what happens when we let social/cultural/financi...

Re: Trump's Movement to Unilateralism

Now things are out in the open. This is the American reality and we have the opportunity to deal with it and move forward. Yes, a good thing, I agree. It's kind of like that point in therapy where your dark side gets brought out from the shadows into the light. Powerful, scary, ugly (and beautiful)...

Re: Trump's Movement to Unilateralism

Pardon me, it seems to me there is too much anger in the American thinking and behavior. Leftist, "liberal" or rightist - there seems to be much overreaction against eachother. Some, perhaps many of us (on both sides) think the situation is dire enough to merit an equally dire response. Anger can b...

Re: Trump's Movement to Unilateralism

End rant. End rant on my end. ! ;-) That's what discourse is like these days in this strange collective we call America: trading rants. I had this idea to start a meetup group in my neck of the woods in which Pro- and Anti-Trumpians would come together and discuss, hang out, get to know each other....

Re: Trump's Movement to Unilateralism

Begin rant ... Trump is more than just a boob and cartoon villain ... he's an enabler of violence, gross to subtle: racism, fear-mongering, truth-trashing, press-quashing, anti-science, anti-cooperation, anti-kindness/compassion, anti-honor. He makes his supporters (and even, egads, some of his arch...

Re: Trump's Movement to Unilateralism

Trying to impeach a democratically elected leader, even if a significant number of people strongly dislike him, only leads to further weakening our democratic system through the precedent that it sets. If the leader is causing enough damage to country and world, stopping this leader beats potential...

Re: Trump's Movement to Unilateralism

Its obvious that he doesn't know what he is doing. My worst fear is that maybe he actually does. I think he knows he's a contestant on Global Survivor and is willing to do pretty much anything that will lead to his beating everyone else. https://thefirstward.files.wordpress.com/2017/05/mumy-twiligh...
