Re: Shingon in San Jose area California

This is a fringe group, not recognized by the shingon establishment. One that also ordains people without training, including children and claims people are posessed by monkey demons. The master is now dead too. I know the California guy. Hes jut a businessman sent by the late master to propogate. N...

Re: A Buddhist Theory of Semiotics: -Have you read?

Rambelli, the author, writes about many Japanese religions. His stuff is all super on target. He has written a lot on shingon, and various aspects of Japanese buddhism.

Its a good work.

Re: The FGS Buddha tooth

IMHO, it truly does APPEAR to be a complete and total fake. What's the old expression? If it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck..... The burden of proof always rests on the one with something to prove, correct? And thus far, there is no proof. In fact, there is quite a bit of evidence (as posted ...

Re: Information on Zen Hat

None of them are Shingon, I have checked. I meant the mummy's hat not other... those mummified shingon priests look just like the one you send... so it does not have to be dressed like actual priest, they may have some special way to dress them after death. They do not die in those robes and hats. ...

Re: Information on Zen Hat

Thank you. This was the closest picture online to the hat I could find. I have another picture, of a Rinzai monk wearing a *very* similar hat and am looking for more information. As it is an old photograph, and I do not have a scanner, I cannot upload it, so I simply found the closest hat online. It...

Re: Lisence to Teach vs Maha Acarya?

Eijo, thank you again for your very helpful reply. Today those titles can be received by applying (with a considerable honorarium attached) to the administrative offices of your sect depending on years in tonsure, so to speak. There is no functional difference among them, except in some locales wher...

Re: Lisence to Teach vs Maha Acarya?

Eijo, thank you so much for the thorough and thoughtful reply. I have a couple of more questions: The "Maha acarya" mentioned is fully called a Dento Dai-Ajari 傳燈大阿闍梨. Only a person with that rank can formally teach praxis in Koyasan. It is received by special admission and at least another ten year...

Lisence to Teach vs Maha Acarya?

Note: Edited just a bit (I am tired). On an English Shingon website: http://www.shingon.org/sbii/training/TestingETC.html it states: Discipleship and Training for the Shingon Priesthood TESTING, LICENSING and FURTHER TRAINING The Disciple must then take a comprehensive test for Licensing and upon pa...

Karma Kagyu Reading List?

Hello! I am currently researching Karma Kagyu Buddhism, but really am not sure where to start. I am most interested in: 1. History 2. Practices 3. Lineage 4. Symbolism 5. Clothing Does anyone know good resources to find any or all of these? I have searched through the forum but have not come up with...

Academic Sources on "4 Jewel" Refuge

In many tantric traditions, in addition to taking refuge in the Buddha, Dharma and Sangha, one also takes refuge in the "Guru" or teacher (the 4th gem). Does anyone know of any academic sources that discuss this?

Thanks so much!

Re: Vairochana

Don't convolute vairocana with mahavairocana (as someone did above giving mahavairocana's Japanese name) though related, they are perhaps two different deities. Different traditions view them differently. In Shingon, Mahavairocana is not only the the complete dharmakaya, but also the complete totali...

Information on Zen Hat

Anyone know about this hat? It is used in Japan, presumably by Zen (possibly Rinzai). I have sen it called 観音帽子 and 菩薩巾 http://www.google.com/imgres?biw=1958&bih=856&tbm=isch&tbnid=c7-OTettoOC3fM:&imgrefurl=http://www5e.biglobe.ne.jp/~e-kaori/houi/houikata2.htm&docid=pBD3BLo1ayyDDM&imgurl=http://www...
