Johnny Dangerous wrote: Mon Apr 08, 2024 2:27 am Seeing empowerment as simply some kind of “permission” is completely wrong anyway, the experience and transformation of the mind stream conferred by empowerment is precisely what “empowers” a person to progress in practice.

Re: Dzogchen Historiography

In fact Paul Repps had also conjectured a Saivite connection to Buddhist meditation in one of his books ("Zen Flesh, Zen Bones", if memory serves) although he may not have directly referenced Dzogchen (as the book was published relatively early on in the diffusion of Dzogchen in the West)...

Re: Dzogchen Historiography

Mutsuk, if you know Jean-Luc and he has any updated thoughts since his seminal 1999 work on the Śaiva-Dzogchen connections, I'd very much love to hear them! I corresponded with JLA on this last year, and he said that he has not been able to date the Saivite sources he used to suggest a connection w...

Re: Dzogchen Historiography

Can't forget about Vimalamitra too, also an Indian who brought Dzogchen to Tibet Vimalamitra, according to traditional accounts, learned his Dzogchen from Sri Simha in China, where the latter was born. And Vimalamitra was most likely himself a Kashmiri, which locale might be included in India out o...

Re: Dzogchen Historiography

It's highly unlikely any of the later texts attributed to Śrī Siṃha were actually written by him. Why do you say this? This is actually the only part I was looking for clarification of. Which later texts are you talking about? And, while authorship of much or most Dzogchen material is questionable,...

Re: Shingon?

After having a number of conversations with a Khenpo and Geshe trying to clarify what actual sadhanas and practices were what classification of Tantra, I concluded that in terms of practice this classification is ad-hoc, and plenty of practices could be said to occupy multiple positions in the sche...

Re: Worship of Ganesha in Buddhism

More generally, the overwhelming ritual function of Ganeśa in Hinduism is towards the front end of pūjas, where you will have (in roughly this order): kalaśa sthāpanā (the establishment of a vase, which symbolizes many things like the body, deity, etc.), Can you suggest any sources on the historica...

Re: Shingon?

Most of this info is false. Shingon is strictly Vajrayana or also called Mikkyo. Right. It's amazing how people go out of their way to bash a tradition they have no knowledge or exposure to. Shingon has plenty of empowerment (I received it myself). Self-generation is also an essential part ...

Re: Dzogchen Historiography

The scholarly research on the topic shows that even when we see the term "dzogchen" in early work, it did not refer to any sort of separate vehicle, but initially something that happened during the Guhyagarbha completion stage, and then over many iterations and centuries its meaning evolv...

Re: Worship of Ganesha in Buddhism

First of all, as you may know, all elephant-headed deities are not Ganesha. Some esoteric schools use art in which their protectors trample gods with elephant heads, who are taken to personify bad inflluences. Buddhist schools that have formal transmitted practices involving elephant-headed deities ...

Re: Authentic Dzogchen teachers Europe

"pure" dzogchen without deity yoga etc has been taught recently by ChNN only. The idea that Dzogchen without "deity yoga, etc." is "pure" or "pristine" implies that such a thing is superior to other ways Dzogchen has been introduced, and that nothing is misse...

Re: Wrathful "Mahakala" with Phurba and Kapala?

though I wish there were some more specific info, at least I can gather that it's a form of Mahakala, indeed, from the Nyingma traditions. That's a great start, and may be enough...... If you have access to a sufficient selection of Palyul thangkas, you could compare the lineage figures above the f...
