Re: NATURE

From Wordsworth's "Tintern Abbey": "For she [nature] can so inform The mind that is within us, so impress With quietness and beauty, and so feed With lofty thoughts, that neither evil tongues Rash judgments, nor the sneers of selfish men Nor greeting where no kindness is, nor all The dreary intercou...

If you haven't yet chosen a principal lama, no problem. If you have, ask him or her.

I'll put on a plug for Meido's book -- it's extremely well done, and I wish I'd had it when I was starting out.

Re: Ngakpa International - Vajrayana Training

She and her teachers were discussed on the previous incarnation of this board. I personally have met her and found her interesting as a person, but her formal credentials cannot even be called weak. Just came across this statement on an online event add and it sounds so confidently authoritative I ...

Re: Courtesies Regarding the Lama, Sangha, and Place of Dharma Activity

Just don't put yourself forward too much, watch what others are doing, ask people (who are also not hogging the limelight), and show consideration. If people want to put you down because of your ignorance, just don't take it seriously and do better next time.

Re: First mahayana sutras, when?

Please don't speak of the "original Sanskrit" versions of Mahayana sutras. Most of them were translated from Prakrit, mostly NW Prakrit. Sanskrit did not come into widespread use in Buddhism until well past the first century, as I recall.

Fukujoju bosatsu's suport

Can someone tell me what Chinese word was used to describe the creature that is the throne-mount of Fukujoju bosatsu in the Kongocho-gyo tradition, as the peacock is for Muryoju-butsu? I know the Indic and Tibetan, but I am curious as to what word or words the translators chose to render it into Chi...

Re: Dharma government?

Thailand was a constitutional monarchy on the British model. However, it is now a military dictatorship and has been since 2014. Thailand has been in and out of military rule since the early 20th century, and theoretically a constitutional monarchy off and on, sometimes at the same time. However, t...

I think the last confusing part is du yig (abbrevated writing) for Namo. Such things are not so common on sculpture, but the quality of the writing is not that good anyway, and there appears to have been a space problem too.

For what it's worth, I recently spent some time with some hard-core retreat chodpas in the Himalayas, and some of them use resin kanglings, although they would have preferred real ones.
